Revelation 20:1-3:

Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain. 2 And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, 3 and threw him into the pit, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he might not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were ended. After that he must be released for a little while.

In Matthew 24 (among other places) Jesus told His followers (the people physically standing in front of Him, ➡️not us⬅️) very clearly that His return would be preceeded by:
1️⃣ The temple being torn down, verse 2.
2️⃣ Intense persecution and death of the saints, verse 9.
3️⃣ The abomination of desolation spoken of by Daniel the prophet (which Luke 21:20 explains is Jerusalem encompassed with armies), verse 15.
4️⃣ That his followers would need to pay attention to the signs because they would need to flee from Judea without any hesitation or be killed or captured, verses 16-20.

A futurist interpretation of His words says that when He said those things and concluded with "this generation shall not pass till all these things be fulfilled", that He didn’t mean the generation He was actually talking to at that time- He simply meant the generation that saw the signs of His return would not pass before the end came- which apparently would be a generation 2000+ years later.
However, the very people that He was personally speaking to at that time (*that* generation, the ones physically with him) would soon face:
1️⃣ The temple being torn down.
2️⃣ Intense persecution and death of the saints.
    3️⃣ Jerusalem encompassed with armies.
4️⃣ They had to pay attention to the signs because they personally had to flee from Judea without any hesitation or were killed or captured.
(The attack on Jerusalem in 70AD, per our own historical account, was so severe that starving woman ate their own children. Research the Fall of Jerusalem or the Destruction of the 2nd Temple.)

How confusing and neglectful (and even cruel) that Jesus did not clarify to the people who directly heard his words that they, too, would face the very things that He spoke of; but that he wasn’t referring to them as the generation that would see His return.
These things were exactly what Jesus told them would happen, so they were expectantly looking for those signs, yet somehow He wasn’t meaning *their* persecution and death, or *that* temple falling, or *those* armies encompassing Jerusalem… why would He not let them know that? Could you imagine the Christians of that time facing all of that tribulation and holding onto the promise that their Savior was coming back for them soon, then afterwards those that are left look around and realize there was half a wall left of the temple (which is a false narrative) and oops, we got the time wrong guys. Jesus isn’t coming back for thousands of years yet.
C.S Lewis and many others concluded that Jesus honestly thought that He was returning to that generation (and tought His disciples so), but that He got it wrong because Jesus Himself said that only the Father knew the day and the hour of the coming of the Son of Man (Matthew 24:36).
However knowing the specific *generation* He would return to (a 40yr time frame) is not nullified by Him saying that only the Father knows the specific *day and hour*.
That was also said before His ascension back to the Father.
Revelation specifically starts out (giving us the foundation for what was being prophesied) by saying "The Revelation of Jesus Christ,
    ➡️*which God gave unto him*⬅️,
to ➡️show his servants⬅️ things which must ➡️*shortly*⬅️ come to pass"
So Jesus has been told *by the Father* (the one who knows the *day and the hour*) a revelation that was given to John to tell the people of *the generation Jesus first spoke* that what He is about to say will *shortly* come to pass.
Think about that: Jesus just confirmed His imminent return to the generation he had litteraly said "would not pass" until all had been fulfilled.
It all fits together flawlessly- the imminent time statements are so cleary telling us that Jesus was returning to the generation that He left.
The confusion comes in because of what we are told about history and on the dating of the writing of Revelation. (Internal evidence gives ample proof that it was written decades prior to 90AD, and I firmly believe Satan himself is behind the confusion on that dating.)
Per our historical narrative, everyone knows Jesus couldn’t have returned to that generation because our history books say that He didn’t. So we start twisting and manipulating each one of the imminent time statements to fit some future event or generation, or simply excuse them away. We have faith in the Word and in Jesus, but we stumble over man-made history and are forced to misinterpret the Word of God so that it fits our known reality. This is a hard one to get past because we are taught conventional history since childhood and it becomes our internal reality foundation to our timeline understanding. Our enemy has gone to great lengths to work that to his advantage.
But we must let the Word interpret history- not allow man-made history (even ‘christian’ based) distort the Word.
The world’s teaching on evolution vs God’s creation account clearly teaches us this.
But even the church stumbles over the historical narrative. However, as most already know or are coming to realize, our historical account is a mess. Our calendar and timeline are all mixed up. The infamous 1000 year dark ages are not so dark after all (in fact they are quite a lot like a certain Thousand Year Reign).
For me it comes down to asking "what is our timeline as the Bible teaches?"
And there are too many cohesive imminent time statements to get around. When taken as a whole, it all becomes very clear.

So if we take the whole book of revelations as symbolic, so the return of Christ is just a symbol? There will be no lake of fire? No forever damnation? No ressurection? It’s very dangerous to just dismiss a whole book because "it’s not a real key or a real chain".

@ number of hills where God owns the cattle (Ps. 50:10) is that a literal thousand?

the number of enemy soldiers that one Israelite will pursue (Josh. 23:10) is that a literal thousand?

the number of generations with whom God keeps covenant (Deut. 7:9) is that a literal thousand which by the way would be nearly 30 to 40,000 years???

  8. @bobmarslek15 on May 6, 2025 at 9:17 pm

This was some of the most incorerent bunch of crap I’ve ever heard. I imagine this same preacher would spin in circles to explain how Jesus did not literally drink wine with alcohol and that it was merely grape juice….

How often does the bible speak of deception? Christ already returned, he spoke to that generation not to us here now, do you believe his word or no? Sorry but you shouldn’t twist everything to fit your thoughts. The Little Season is none of those ‘choices’. Once you see the history and lack of accuracy, add in the old world buildings and how the bible finally fits together it’s amazing. Deception is most definitely rampant, take the state of Israel as the largest deception.

  15. @Steven-sy8mn on May 6, 2025 at 9:31 pm

If Jesus destroys death at His return then we are in the millennial reign to where satans loosed for a little season ( 1776 ) just look at the statue of Liberty ( really Lucifer ) the chain on the foot is broken. There wont be a millennial reign of Christ after His final return because He destroys death at His return. I believe it is symbolic of the Church age ( Age of Grace ) we are close. Amen +

That music not letting me focus on what he’s saying and it’s awful

  17. @rossjpurdy on May 6, 2025 at 9:32 pm

We are in ch 20 now? That is nonsense. The premill position is what Scripture teaches. There is nothing more optimistic than eagerly awaiting the King and Kingdom ! Symbolism is not mutually exclusive to a literal understanding of the text and a failure to understand this is not taking the Bible seriously or will at least to be using a rather shallow lens and absolutely plays into the liberal position and rather stupidly so. The prophets demonstrate this over and over again.

I like Voddie, but he’s reading things into the text that aren’t there, or elsewhere in Scripture.

  20. @Dan-bp8ts on May 6, 2025 at 9:36 pm

I really appreciate Voddie’s teaching, but I don’t think it is useful to say things such as that premillenialists usually view the future pessimistically, and that it creates a why bother type attitude. This type of categorization of people whose views you don’t support into a broad, unholy category is not conducive to the overall Christian message. That type of comment would be better left out, if only to protect the reputation of your Christian brothers and sisters who do hold a premillenial view, but still are working hard to continue the work of God on earth (which is by far the attitude of almost all premillenialists that I have met).

  21. @richardstaple1762 on May 6, 2025 at 9:37 pm

Dr Bauchi is doing something dangerous , adding to and subtracting from the word of God, the very thing this book prohibits , he’s a good teacher generally , but his view on eschatology is not biblical

  22. @hopeunlimited2024 on May 6, 2025 at 9:38 pm

Great stuff this. So, have you ever wondered why Revelation does NOT talk about the great events of history. No mention of the Fall, only a fleeting mentioned of the crucifixion, no mention of the Ascension , never mind the great events of the Exodus, Exile or Return.

  23. @EschatologyIn60Seconds on May 6, 2025 at 9:41 pm

In Genesis 32:29 Christ would not tell Jacob His name.

In Judges 13:17-18 He tells Manoah His name is secret.

At Armageddon (Revelation 19:12) Christ still has this unknown name. It is the name of God; it’s His new name and He will write it on us after He returns (Revelation 3:12). This name is not found in Scripture & will only be known after His return.

If He returned in 70 AD, then anyone pushing any kind of eschatology that says so should be able to tell us what this new name is….but they cannot.

When Christ returns we serve Him with 1 consent & 1 pure language (Zephaniah 3:8-9). So if He returned in the first century then why has there been multiple languages (doctrines) & multiple consents (denominations & divisions) among the body since He allegedly returned?

According to 1 Corinthians 11:26, communion is to be taken until the Lord comes. If He already came back why are 70 ADeists still eating the cracker & drinking the grape juice?

When Christ returns we receive sinless immortal bodies (1 Corinthians 15:51-54 & Philippians 3:21 & Hebrews 9:28) like the angels in heaven (Matthew 22:30). If He came back in 70 AD, then why did the apostle John die in 99 AD; 29 years AFTER he should have had a sinless immortal body?

We must forgive the sins our our brethren until 70×7. 70×7 is total fulfillment of Daniel’s 70 weeks (Daniel 9:24-27). If 70×7 was fulfilled in 70 AD, then why are we still required to forgive sins today? Sinless immortal bodies come at 70×7. With sinless immortal bodies, there’s no need to forgive sins anymore.

  24. @7F0X7 on May 6, 2025 at 9:42 pm

If a preacher says there’s no literal Millennial reign of Christ it’s because he’s not going to be here during the Millennium…

  25. @Kannon_BR on May 6, 2025 at 9:43 pm

Who cares if the millennium is literal or not? What matters is that it’s going to happen and that’s it. If you’re saved, you’re going to outlive the millennium (literally or not), if you’re not saved, you’ll have more important things to spend your time with like burning forever than to count the millennium to see if it’s a real one (or the lake of fire is not literal as well??)

  26. @mushroombird9400 on May 6, 2025 at 9:44 pm

    INOT VERY GOOD BIBLICAL HERMENEUTICSIKE

  32. @justinjustin4605 on May 6, 2025 at 9:48 pm

Why do we have to interpret it as exactly 1000 years I thought the kingdom is supposed to last forever

  33. @beauchal on May 6, 2025 at 9:48 pm

It’s all about hermeneutics. Do you take the Bible for its straightforward, literal, grammatical interpretation, which is in line with the original author’s intent? IE all of the 300+ prophecies about Jesus’s first coming were fulfilled literally, Jesus quoted Old Testament prophets literally, Jesus’s disciples took his commands literally, etc. Or do you have to allegorize and symbolize passages which reads into scripture meaning that isn’t there?

Six times in Revelation 20 John tells us that the millennial reign of Christ is 1,000 years long. In the same passage, he tells us that Satan must be loosed for "a little while," at the end of the 1,000 years. So, we have him using a specific time period numerous times along with an indeterminate period of time. How long the duration of the millennium is is not a trick question. It’s 1,000 years long. A-mil and Post-mil views have to then say "well, it’s not exactly 1,000 years long, its just means a long period of time." This is very poor exegesis. John could have told us it’s "a long period of time" if he wanted to. When you read Zechariah 14 you see Christ’s second coming, him touching down on the Mount of Olives, warring against the armies that come against Israel, and then reigning from a restored earth. The sequence of events is pretty obvious and important. You can make a compelling case for pre-mil on this capter alone before you read a single page of New Testament scripture.

  34. @MiriamSlaffey on May 6, 2025 at 9:50 pm

Voddie is a good preacher and I respect him, but with all due respect, the amillennial view is intellectually dishonest and biblically undefendable! Are you saying that Paul is a lier? When did Jesus come with shout for those who are dead and those who are alive and remain?
1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 KJV [16] For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: [17] then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Who are these multitudes that nobody can count?
    Revelation 7:14-17 NKJV
[14] And I said to him, “Sir, you know.” So he said to me, “These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. [15] Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve Him day and night in His temple. And He who sits on the throne will dwell among them. [16] They shall neither hunger anymore nor thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any heat; [17] for the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to living fountains of waters. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

  35. @q-man762 on May 6, 2025 at 9:51 pm

Is this actually Voddie ? Could A. I. Duplicate his voice? I thought he had a sound doctrine. I see the one thousand years as literal, with Revelation describing long lifespans, nations required to follow Christs commands from Jerusalem, animals cease to kill to eat etc. It’s a real time span.

  36. @justinpeterburford on May 6, 2025 at 9:51 pm

Not a Baptist or a Calvinist. But thank you grace family baptist and pastor Baucham for this video. The background music was not a problem.

  37. @ehdforlife on May 6, 2025 at 9:51 pm

Just because one thing is symbolic, doesn’t mean it all is. And the problem with saying everything is symbolic, is when does it stop? Is Adam Eve, the flood, satan, Jesus, God? Some things are symbolic, like Seven golden lapstands. The Bible even tells us what is supposed to be. The seven angels. What does 1,000 years mean? A very long time? Does chaining satan mean, oh, God just put him somewhere to rest for a while? No. Honestly, 1,000 years or a long time doesn’t matter, what matters is what is the Bible telling us. What is the point. There’s a battle, God wins. The beast and false prophet are defeated and satan is locked up for a time. Then he is unleashed again. The Bible is clear and even gives a reason why. To deceive the nations.

  38. @rogermetzger7335 on May 6, 2025 at 9:52 pm

When my dad was born in 1905, his mother was an adherent of an a-millennial denomination. Dad was catechized in that denomination – presumably from about the age of six until he was eight or ten when he started sometimes attending worship services of his father’s denomination which was pre-millennial. The pre-millennialism of his father’s denomination was historicist – which is very different from the futurist pre-millennialism popular among people who call themselves “evengelical” in the United States in the twenty-first century.

I was born in the United States in 1944. Several times when I was a boy, my dad advised me, “Read for yourself, study for yourself and think for yourself.” He did more than that, however. He made sure I had a Bible with marginal references and a concordance and that I learned how to use those Bible study tools. He also made sure I knew some things about his own methods of Bible study. He subscribed to the following principles of Bible interpretation. More about which if anyone is interested.

Dad favored the historicist method of interpretation and he preferred to interpret Bible passages as literally as he could but I later realized that there really isn’t any way to interpret every Bible passage literally. So how to decide which passages to interpret literally?

1: Some Bible prophecies are conditional. Some are unconditional. Which are which?
2: Some of the restoration prophecies fulfilled after the Babylonian captivity in the sixth century B.C. Which ones?
3: Some people will inherit what was promised to Abraham. Many people assume it will be his physical descendents but there are several biblical reasons to questeoin that assumption – based on which Bible passages are interpreted literally.
4: What is represented by the olive tree in Romans 11?
5: Does the study of the Hebrew Bible (aka the Tanakh) make it easier to both accept the Messiah and understand the prophecies of Jesus and those in the book of Revelation?
6: Is it possible that some prophecies may have double application – i.e. is it possible that, even if we think we know what a symbol means, could it also apply to something else?
7: Are the” prophecies in the book of Revelation chronological?
8: Jesus said, “In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” Did he mean what he said? Or did he mean he would return so he could be with us where we are?
9: In Revelation 20, there is a references to people who “lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.” (Verse 4 See also verse 6.) Is that past, present or future? Is there any Bible passages that says those people have reigned, are reigning or will reign with Jesus “on the earth”? (Let me know if you find one.)

  39. @bock1965 on May 6, 2025 at 9:52 pm

Soooo… 1000 does not mean a literal thousand years… but it merely means " A large " number…. hahahaha… so the issue isn’t whether Satan will be bound or not but rather how long. Mr Voddie must then admit that 1000 is a large number in itself AND that if all it represents is a "large" number Satan may well be bound for 1 million years since after all a million is a "large" number as represented by 1000 symbolically. So here is my question for you Pastor Vodie. Is Satan going to be bound at all?? If so why in the world does it matter to you if it’s 10. 100 or 1000 years?? Jesus as omnipotent God is truly reigning over all creation at all times. Yet he has allowed Satan to reign on earth for a time. Do you actually believe he is not still reigning here when in America human sex trafficking of children is freely moving in the darkness and abortion is the desire of young women and socialism is the siren call beckoning out young people? Sir it is obvious the Millenial Reign of Jesus as described in Revelation is certainly not happening right now.

  41. @williamacuff7707 on May 6, 2025 at 9:55 pm

Some say it’s three parts saying the same three times; God, Jesus, hasn’t thought myself this way! Obedience and faithfulness is all that maters no matter the understanding in revelation: blessed are we that hear the words of revelation, what is the essence; obedience and faithfulness. Actually we’re at verse 8, chap 6. Tribulation starts when we go into chap 6, verse 9!

  42. @kamilledanford4904 on May 6, 2025 at 9:59 pm

Music is distracting!!!!!!! You would not play music during his sermon in a church.

  43. @bairfreedom on May 6, 2025 at 10:00 pm

The reason it is most definitely a literal 1,000 years……is because it ends. It has a beginning, when Jesus arrives, and it has a definite end, where Satan is released and defeated. It is not a metaphorical argument for eternity etc. Because people die, and war breaks out again at the end of it. Pretty simple. Nations even try to rebel a bit by not coming to see Christ and Jesus has to make it not rain on their nation. So it is also not the complete new earth.

  44. @vitamingreen4815 on May 6, 2025 at 10:00 pm

If you take the Bible literally, like a history book, with Jesus telling his disciples that some of them will still be alive when He returns to establish His Kingdom, it means we’re in the little season as described in Revelation 20. That is the only thing that makes sense.

  45. @oldschoolbibleguy5477 on May 6, 2025 at 10:00 pm

I generally like Voddie Baucham but his interpretation of Revelation is disingenuous beyond comprehension, as is what he attributes to the premillennial view. In his view the "church" does the heavy lifting. In the pre-millennial view Jesus does it all.
