HOW TO DO A WORD STUDY in your Bible study & Bible journaling notes

Join me today for a tutorial on how to do a word study in your Bible study. We look at the Greek and I show you multiple word studies and what I would and WOULD NOT do along the way! Obviously there is a ton of nuance to doing a word study, but this is an introduction to the topic and I hope it helps you feel a bit more confident doing a word study in your own Bible study!

FYI bible hub has added things correlating to the greek and hebrew

Hey! I am a pastor in Texas. Been doing this for 30 years and you are giving away all my secrets. Loved this video. I can now point people to a video when they ask me how I do my word studies. Two suggestions: Don’t skip "stood up" because this animates the story being told and people love to visualize the action; and find the underlying word ("oikos" in this study) and allow the Greek prefixes and combo words paint the picture of the text.

Where can I find your Biblical Terms Cliff Notes?

It really helped me understand more about how to do Word studies. I went ahead and did one over the word "steadfastness" in James 1:4 this morning and loved it! I went using Bible Hub through Google like you’ve recommended and that was SO much easier than going to the Bible Hub app! Do you think that was a good word to choose? Thanks for another great video, Faith! ❤

  8. @jennmomma on May 20, 2025 at 9:38 pm

You said Ephesians 2:9 but you used Ephesians 2:19.

  9. @KayintheBible on May 20, 2025 at 9:43 pm

It’s interesting hearing you use the word “heresy” so much in this context. If you go back to time of the dark ages, it was used to describe “deciding for yourself what to believe”.
The catholic church was burning people at the stake for even owning a Bible… you had to agree with their doctrines or die.
We should never accept something because a majority believe something. Take EVERY little detail to scripture and see if it lines up with the ENTIRETY of scripture.

Sometimes I like doing word studies on the small words like "in", "with" or "for" because they can really elevate the meaning. For example, in the Spirit is a very frequent phrase in the NT and it has specific meanings depending on the verse. I LOVE word studies!

Thank you Faith. Love this video. Word studies are so helpful to me and I really enjoy doing them. Grateful for all the wealth of your wisdom and knowledge you share. Has totally enriched my Bible study!!

Love your channel! God has definitely used your ministry here to help grow me in His Word. Be not weary in well doing cuz you definitely can’t see all the good He’s doing through you!

  13. @merrivoelker2531 on May 20, 2025 at 9:48 pm

To me that’s a big red flag when a pastor tells you not to teach on something

  14. @helencard4327 on May 20, 2025 at 9:48 pm

To be honest, I found it a bit overwhelming. I think it would have helped me more if it had been done slower over a couple of videos. I had a difficult time following your navigations on Bible Hub at times but that is quite common for me. I am looking "here" but you are clicking "there"… LOL

  15. @Faith-n-Music on May 20, 2025 at 9:48 pm

heard a pastor say, Rabis sat to teach. Peter ‘stood up’ because he was heralding something. That’s cultural background tho, not a word study issue. Just funny you picked that one because according to this pastor, there was significance in standing.

  16. @kathyjomorris9835 on May 20, 2025 at 9:50 pm

Follow God, your heart, your gut.,.anyone criticizing in a looking at you instead of God!! Their issue not yours! Thank you……I want fire like when I started and decided to start word study and u came up!; God whisper

What are your thoughts of Dr. David Hillman‘s translation of the classical ancient Greek texts? He talks about a very interesting translation about Jesus and biblical history according to what the Greeks wrote in ancient texts.

Have a question on a word study please when you have time. I am in II Kings 24:4 and am interested in … the LORD not willing to forgive.” I looked at to forgive but it didn’t give me much so I am not sure how many words in that phrase to do. Could you advise please?

  20. @jewelthompson3492 on May 20, 2025 at 10:05 pm

I have a hard time studying the way others study the bible, and God made me different, so I have been studying the soap way. But I feel the need deeper studying. But when I go back to read it, I feel like it makes no cents. I have alway had that problem with reading. But to listen to it being read I get it. Reading is like my whole focus is on the Pronunciation on the words to get it right. Because I have the pronunciation wrong. My question is how do I get my studies off the paper and just listening to it? Because reading is is not my stronghold. Hearing real comes to me strongly. So having that would help me. Do you know anything I can find to help me?

  28. @AileenCastilloRios1987 on May 20, 2025 at 10:15 pm

Oh my Lord! You talk so fast! LOL I put the captions on and had to rewind a bunch of times…..phew. But, you are videos are very informative

  29. @snakejumper3277 on May 20, 2025 at 10:15 pm

Any pastor or teacher who discourages you from Koine Greek word studies is misguided (At least in that).
We have more resources available than any previous decade & can be independent lifelong learners. Classrooms are great but are not for everyone. Rely on good resources & use the advice of people you trust.

  30. @laurenseiler8595 on May 20, 2025 at 10:15 pm

Faith! Thank you for these videos!! You mentioned right before 12:59 that translating one language to another is a story for another day. Do you have a video about that?

  31. @BibleNerdMinistries on May 20, 2025 at 10:16 pm

I’m curious: did this video overwhelm or inspire you? I was a little afraid while editing it that it would be overwhelming!

  32. @twistedlimb4053 on May 20, 2025 at 10:16 pm

Strong’s numbering system? Anybody use it?

  33. @mavrickglo on May 20, 2025 at 10:17 pm

That was a pretty good over view and helpful step by step. I’ll admit I am not a big fan of word studies. I had a biblestudy leader who was all about Hebrew word studies (even I. The New Testament ) and I found a lot of her conclusions suspicious. I generally stick with English Bible studies, but that’s me. If this is your jam that is great.

Thank you SO much for this! I am learning so much from this and am kind of doing the same thing on my laptop along side you to learn and it’s super helpful! Not overwhelming, just new information!

  36. @xSarahNicole on May 20, 2025 at 10:21 pm

I love using BibleHub and BibleRef. I agree with being careful with what kind of words that are being studied. Two words I like to use as an example that is great for Word Studies are Heaven and Earth in Genesis.

Serious bible/bible-journaling question: I have a project in mind where I am going to write out the whole bible, and if that wasn’t daunting enough, I’m planning to write it in the original language (Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic) and in the original translation (Latin), and in my personal translation (English) obviously with a lot of help from solid sources (I will probably use your video here the get some of those). My plan was to write in 4 columns across 2 pages with the original text in the left column on the left page, the Latin in the right column on the left page, the English in the left column of the right page, and then to leave the right column of the right page blank for journaling. I would like to leave this to my children for their spiritual journeys, with the idea that they would be able to continue journaling. Does this sound like a good plan, or should I leave more blank area than 25% of the physical book? Also, yes I expect this to take 20-30 years or so, I am aware of the massive task.
