And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, 2He said unto them, HAVE YE RECEIVED THE HOLY GHOST SINCE YE BELIEVED? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. 3And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism. 4Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. 5When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, THE HOLY GHOST CAME ON THEM; AND THEY SPOKE WITH TONGUES, AND PROPHESIED. 7AND ALL THE MEN WERE ABOUT TWELVE.

I have a feeling that tongues in Acts and Corinthians are the same. If you could speak in a tongue, a language you never learned as in Acts, (Spanish for example), before a Corinthian assembly, NOBODY(in the assembly) can understand, hence the need for interpretation. Remember the letter was written originally to the Corinthian assembly, so "nobody" only refers to nobody in that assembly and not the whole world. So the message spoken is lost even though it could contain the keys to mysteries which could edify the church if it could be understood. Otherwise why would God, the source of all mysteries , drop a mystery into someone’s spirit, for the person to repeat it back to him without the speaker nor the congregation understanding anything?….just my humble opinion

He started correct and ended incorrectly. He was with the second use of tongue. All the scriptures he mentioned are speaking about the same thing.

with the end of the apostolic age, both tongues and healing are not normative. why? because we have something they did not have during the apostolic age – namely the complete cannon of scripture! (our itching ears don’t need a sign and none shall be given). both tongues and miraculous healings happen today – just not in penrecostal/charismatic churches. What’s happening in these settings is demonstrably false, e.g, known language – wrong interpretation. At best these are merely emotional outbursts and at worst, demonic possession. If you visit or attend such a church, my advice – run, don’t walk to the nearest exit.

I’d like to add that while theology is good it isnt enough you need to be baptised by the Holy spirit. I think this is where there is a divide you have the intellctual who is christian by name and you have the other christian full of the Holy spirit who is christian by nature.

I really cannot emphasise this enough your intelligence isnt enough if you look at the disciples of Jesus they were all fishermen, hard working etc

They didn’t have a theology degree they believed a simple message and followed Jesus. They came to him like a little child.

I say this from a place of concern and love

    John 3:3

3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God

  11. @HillbillyBlack on April 7, 2025 at 8:13 pm

the real tragedy of todays church is its rejection of its very reformation. Acts 2 speaks of Tongues as an isolated event. A time when believers would spread the gospel in OTHER languages AKA Tongues. Not babbling garbage like you see here. Furthermore, Past the eye witnesses of Christ, "Tongues" is mentioned NOWHERE in the early church as an active usage.

The reality is anyone perceiving Tongues this way DOES NOT READ THE BIBLE in CONTEXT!!!!

Its NEVER an unknown Language. Cliff sadly does not read the bible contextually in 1 Cor. He’s spot on for the first half, But exegetically incorrect for the second part.

1 cor 14:2 is not about speaking in Tongues in mysteries as in the tongue is mysterious but rather that what is spoken in tongues is speaking ABOUT mysteries. In Tongues these are Communiations of PROPHECY of THAT day.

  12. @unknown_amazing_chap4480 on April 7, 2025 at 8:15 pm

The Bible never says that the disciples spoke in "known languages". It’s actually the exact opposite! The Bible calls tongues "unknown languages" and "new tongues" and also "other tongues". Nowhere does it say that tongues are known languages! That is a lie!

"Unknown languages" and "new tongues" and also "other tongues".
all happen to be the exact opposite of known languages! It would actually sound like gibberish to any person who hears it.

The disciples did not speak in known languages but in other tongues (a sort of gibberish, if that is what you want to call it) but the miracle is that people who were listening all each heard them speaking in their own languages, because it was the Holy Spirit speaking through them, giving them utterance. God has a supernatural ability to do this because He can do all things!

In other words, a desciple was saying, for example "Ra mashu kateyno desu besitra ha shuta ande" (just an example!), but a Russian guy hears in Russian "God loves you and He has given His Son, Jesus Christ to die for your sins on the cross, so that your sins may be blotted out! Believe the Good News, repent and be saved!" The speaker did not understand what he himself was saying but because it was God speaking and because God is All Powerful, each listener heard the message in his own individual language!

That is a miracle! That is the Mighty God that we serve! He is Powerful and Majestic! The Almighty God! That proves that Christianity is unique among all religions of the earth and that our God is all powerful! So powerful that by just simply using someone’s mouth, He can give a message to many different people at the same time because He is God!

So, once again, if a desciple was saying ""Ra mashu kateyno desu besitra ha shuta ande" (just an example!), the Chinese guy heard the Gospel message in Chinese and at the same time, the Egyptian heard the Gospel in his own language, Egyptian, while at the same time, the African heard the Gospel in African!

It doesn’t say they spoke "known languages" but instead, because God is the one who used the mouths of the speakers (giving them utterance), the ears of the hearers all heard their own individual languages.

There were actually people from every nation or nationality of the earth (literally thousands of people) and they all heard their own individual languages when the Holy Spirit spoke through the Christians.

That was a great miracle and we should actually love the gift of tongues for it, not hate it! It was a miracle!

The miracle was that even though a desciple spoke "gibberish" , as some would call it nowadays, the listeners each understood it in their own language because nothing is impossible to our God! Praise the Lord!

Now let me quickly give one of my many personal testimonies of tongues:

In 2021, I had a problem with my banking app and it didn’t work. I uninstalled and reinstalled it and it still would not work.

Went to the bank several times and the manager and staff could not solve the problem. Some time Later the bank manager even got frustrated and later just refused to help. Even at some of the other branches it was also like that! They refused to help.

This started in January 2021 and by November (almost a year later) it still consisted!

Then by November 2021 I decided to pray in tongues about it because the Bible says in Romans 8 that if we do know not what to pray, the Spirit Himself would intercede on our behalf, praying through us. And when the Spirit prays through us, it will probably sound like "gibberish" to us or to others.

But anyway, I prayed in tongues about it, not knowing what I was saying while praying because the Bible says that when we speak in tongues, our minds are unfruitful. This means we don’t understand what we are saying but the Holy Spirit speaks mysteries through us.

So I prayed in tongues for half an hour and immediately, right there, after my prayer my phone rang and it was the bank’s head office and they said that they want to fix my bank app! They then asked for my personal details and while I spoke to them got a technician to fix my problem on their computer system! About ten or fifteen minutes after praying in tongues about it, my banking app began to work and the problem was fixed by the head office themselves! I did not contact them, I contacted God by speaking in a language that I didn’t understand and He let them contact me! Praise the Lord! And immediately after prayer, they began to solve my problem!

This was after I have been struggling with the problem for 10 months without any results! The very moment when I prayed in tongues, my phone rang and my problem got solved! It happened immediately!
That is the power of tongues! Praise the Lord!

I have many other testimonies of tongues but to type it out here will take too long!
I realised the power of tongues when this happened about 30 years ago:
In Cape Town, on the train station, a man was raised from the dead after having a heart attack, when two born again Christians began praying for him. They prayed in tongues over his body for about 10 minutes and he sat up. He came right back to life.

So we should not hate tongues but love it. We should ask God to help us pray in tongues. And we must accept tongues because it is of God. If it sounds like gibberish, it is fine! We are not supposed to understand it. Just to do it by faith.

So here is the true problem: it is not that tongues have ceased, the problem is that Christians are afraid of speaking in tongues because they cannot understand it. But on the other hand tongues cannot be tongues if you can understand it, then it’s just a normal known language. Tongues are not known languages but instead it is supposed to be an unknown language.

    Hope this helps!
    God bless!

    Welp, he got that wrong!
Tongues was NOT that Peter stood up and communicated the Gospel on the Day of Pentecost.

Peter didn’t preach in tongues. He didn’t have to.

Everyone there spoke a common language. Hebrew.
    Want proof?

The sign on the cross, what languages were written on it?
    Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.

And a few years later, Paul lickety-splitted to Jerusalem, to get there in time for the Feast of Pentecost.
While there, he was arrested in the Temple, and addressed the crowd from the stairs… in Hebrew.
Acts 22:2 When they heard him speak in Hebrew, they kept the more silent.

The devout Jews from other countries all knew Hebrew, besides the languages of their adopted countries. Like the Amish, who have their religious language, but also speak English.

After all, in Acts 2, the crowd conversed among themselves. They talked to each other!

The tongues in the New Testament were never used to communicate the Gospel.
Tongues were spoken by new believers. Not evangelists.

THIS IS A TREMENDOUSLY STUPID QUESTION! ASK THE QUESTION WHY HAVE EUROPEANS WHITE-WASHED THE AFRICAN GOD TO A EUROPEAN god, INCLUDING all the people in the Bible as well as CHANGING thier AFRICAN names to EUROPEAN watered down names

  19. @luandary on April 7, 2025 at 8:22 pm

Tongues, in this scenario, is to speak a foreign dialect(s) unaccustomed to a group of people. For instance, if I preach in Cantonese amidst Saudi Arabians, I speak a different tongue from their’s which needs to be interpreted by an Arab fluent in Cantonese.

The christians who can not speak tongues please be kind and dont have contempt in your heart. I have seen countless videos of so-called christians speaking badly about this subject and dismissing it. Its a gift from God you may have other gifts but please I dont hear any other gift that’s attacked as much as tongues.

Also beware those who are saying its no longer valid you do not speak for God. Your thoughts are not Gods thoughts. You will be judged on what you teach.

I was baptised by the Holy Spirit nearly 3 years ago, then water baptised, I spoke tongues immediately on being saved and I sing to God, I speak to angels and I pray directly to the Lord.

Everything that is negative spoken about this affected me as a young christian in the beginning now I realise that Satan uses people as mouthpieces to deny biblical gifts especially tongues as it is like dropping an atomic bomb on the kingdom of darkness.

If all christians spoke in tongues, then how great would that threat be to the darkness.

Alas, they do not because of unbelief.

And to call it gibberish I really think most christians better ask themselves are they truly born again or are they just lip service christians

I say this because you must be born again and if you were then you wouldn’t even speak about this subject

Please realise the bible isn’t constrained by time, as God isn’t constrained by time, it’s relevant now all of it not just bits of it.

How can christians be a threat to Satan when there is so much division? Because he’s using you as a mouthpiece. The only one that creates division is Satan.

Thank you God for saving me I didn’t deserve anything but through you’re grace and mercy, you saved me. You showed me the truth.

I pray Lord that you show people the truth that the few that will see this message will be blessed and become born again by reaching out to you papa.

I pray for them from a place of sincerity and love let them be clear that they see with there eyes and hear with there ears. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ I pray. Amen

  24. @rickbrendonherring3408 on April 7, 2025 at 8:30 pm

the greek word for tongues Never changes in any of the texts – ‘ glossa’( where we get language ) there’s positively NO mention of gibberish in Bible. If no one is there, means one of two- either one is speaking foreign language to God or person is imposing gibberish as work of Spirit. Why would there be such explicit use and act to of speaking a foreign language, then switch gears and start speaking gibberish? My friends we have to ask ourselves do we idolize experience or do we truly want to understand his word rightly? The word interpret or translate it clearly informs us that this is a language that can be understood by certain people because that certain person has been exposed to that group’s language. but if there is no translator, he must keep silent in the church, and let him speak to himself and to God.
    — 1 Corinthians 14:28 someone would have to say if I’m just going to speak gibberish or I’m uncertain as to what I’m gonna say maybe I should just pray silently

  27. @jerryhayden8720 on April 7, 2025 at 8:36 pm

On the day of Pentecost Peter & the Apostles, filled with the HOLY SPIRIT, boldly proclaimed the LORD Jesus, The CHRIST, as they Spoke in their normal language, & The HOLY SPIRIT delivered the message to the various people from different regions who spoke a different language, & The SPIRIT IS THE ONE That Delivered the message to the hearers in their own language. I’ll never understand how, why turn this into the Apostle’s speaking a different, intelligible foreign language. Scramble it however you feel. Good thing this doesn’t affect your Salvation. Just adds to the mountain of confusion that exists. Nothing new.

  28. @jeremymott on April 7, 2025 at 8:37 pm

  29. @jamiep7322 on April 7, 2025 at 8:38 pm

There’s nothing wrong with speaking in tongues in church as everybody’s speaking because it also Edit files you makes you stronger but I understand the order of it! But I’ve been in services where people just start speaking all together Everybody starts speaking in their heavily language.
In 1 Corinthians 14:4, the Bible says, "He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church".

  30. @JJPriest on April 7, 2025 at 8:38 pm

There must be a separate interpreter. Be careful of not reading context when reading the bible. Ready before verses and after verses as to not take anything out of context. Read 1 Corinthians 14 all the way through. Then reread 27 as it states that there be two or three each and let one interpret. 28 But if there is no interpreter let him keep silent and let him speak to himself and God.

The tongues mentioned in 1st corinthians 14:2 are not meant to be Interpreted by
anyone because it’s a language which no man understands, Tongues that no man can understand is meant for worship and prayer between the believer and God Alone, Cliff thanks Certain people get certain gifts,…thats nonsense, you only have to read Mark 16:17 and see All of these signs will follow for those who believe in the name of Jesus Christ Period. Not special gifts for special people individually chosen, no, all true Believers in Jesus Christ are capable of getting all the gifts. if you step out in faith and receive the gifts. Satan makes people doubt.

  34. @rachalhamilton3571 on April 7, 2025 at 8:39 pm

It was to communicate the Gospel in different languages. Nothing was written yet. It was all oral tradition. I do believe what scripture says, that the Holy Spirit will groan for us when we do not know what hat to pray. So I do believe it is possible Christians in prayer have experienced this and call it tongues even though that’s not what the Word describes it as.

There is the GIFT of tongues and then there is the SIGN of tongues. They are not the same. One must have the sign in order to have the gift.

Tens of millions of people around the world speak in tongues, are we really to believe all of these folks are making it up? Then how are we any better than the atheist who says all of us christians are making up our spiritual experience with Jesus? We aren’t.

The proof is in the Bible and in the fact that it’s still happening across the world.
