I used your revealed self history to encourage a young Uber driver to prepare for the auto taxi that’s around the corner. You’re right, sometimes we need to tell the self critical voice to shut up. I mostly tell that voice to take a break and I’ll tell it when to return. David Butler

I’m sure Rana’s affirmation for that morning of this interview was like "be charming and confident".. Ahsan Nas ☝

1:56 ‘Around the Mango Tree’, sounds like a good title for an interesting novel you should consider writing in your "spare" time, Miss el Kaliouby.

Lex- have you read the book Death and the Penguin by Ukrainian author Andrey Kurkov?

Pescetarianism – I’ve never heard of this but I like it. This is my diet also.

about the dating though and connection… isn’t more about learning to trust our instincts with people, and to like… put ourselves in these uncomfortable positions where we’re so excited we’re terrified? Or find better ways to break boundaries? I guess you can put all the things of a person that has manifested into an app, including behaviour, but how can you put in a person’s potential? especially their potential after a sincere connection where they’re loved & believed in? I just feel like… who i’ve met, including myself, some of us aren’t accurate on paper :/ and a relationship is about the potential for dynamic development & what you can bring out in each other, rather than symbiosis… or maybe it’s just my feeling… and greatness i guess is like, you’re trying to answer a question, but you don’t know what the question is. It’s like, you’re in the middle of a giant crop circle & you know you gotta make it and paddle the wheat down, but you’re not going to know that the hell it is you’re trying to make until it’s done…. i think it’s odd how some of us are so severely compelled to create something we don’t really know based on a feeling.

About a startup company becoming a $billion to $trillion company in the future. That sounds like the pirate Bill ,Gates who crushed all his competitors. I think India has a better idea of starting a lot of little companies to distribute the wealth around a bit. It wouldn’t hurt this country to try that idea here. David Butler

    Great talk, you rock.

    Lex,
Have you thought about making a compilation video of "Now, Let me Leave You With Some Words". I enjoy your conversations greatly and ALWAYS wait to hear the last segment. I would even support you by buying a book with all the quotes you have used at the end of your videos.

Love and empathy are not an algorithm. Love and empathy are rooted in biology and the shared biological experience — suffering, primarily. Hunger, tiredness, sickness, pain — and pleasure. Awareness of one’s own conditions leads us to have empathy for the suffering of others — human and animal. From this, love may derive — which is the desire to create a better condition. A machine cannot achieve this. At best, it is momentarily a very convincing deep fake. A mirror hung in the forest can deep fake a bear or an ape into thinking that the bear or ape in the reflection is an animal tougher and stronger and more terrifying than the enraged bear or ape images himself to be. Even to the point that he may run away from his encounter with this superman that he is unable to intimidate. But the illusion does not last. So it will be with AI.

If Hal, the refrigerator, started giving me advice about what I removed from it’s interior, I’d locate Hal’s speak center and disable it. I don’t need a machine like Hal to tell me what to do.

Lex you should ask her out on a date. Be brave. Out of all your guests, I really noticed, at certain times, that she could have been potentially sizing you up as a potential life partner, or at least considered it in her own mind. Only at times when certain topics weren’t that serious. She said she’s single. You both are very smart and have a lot in common. I’m serious man, you should ask her out to dinner. You never know what can happen. Don’t be a pussy. You’ll never know unless you try. I’m serious man.

  15. David Butler on September 23, 2022 at 1:26 am

I’m not convinced that machines should be babysitting human beings. It strikes me that thinking is similar to choosing representative government because the masses just can’t handle real democracy. Considering the number of incompetent leaders this country has had recently: that thinking is arrogant. Just because you are talking about machines doesn’t mean that thinking is less arrogant. "We should have women run the world" – Rana el Kaliouby. Remind me of Carlin’s words – "If there is a god, it must be a man. No women should or would ever fuck things up this badly"

  18. David Butler on September 23, 2022 at 1:37 am

One of problems with automation is there is a great effort preparing for the tasks that machines will do but not so much for the humans that are out of a job. There are a lot of problems about that currently and not much real effort to do something about that inconvenience’ – incompetent leadership. Gavid Butler

  19. David Butler on September 23, 2022 at 1:37 am

Your guest needs to work on eye contact. I had that problem when I was her age: she needs to ask herself what’s blocking her from making eye contact.

A tradition of modesty. It’s beautiful. ❤️ Her story reminded me of a childhood friend and watching her struggle with it all. I hope she watches this interview and feels comfort. The hijab conversation 11:00 Thank you for this guest! ❤️

Wanting know everything there is to know about a person … for all persons … that is shrinking the small amount of privacy we have left. Do you want what is going on on China to also go on in the rest of the world? I think not. David Butler

I think that one thing people like about cars is that even for a poor man, it is the one domain that is the driver’s castle. I expect that many people just aren’t interested in having someone intrude into their fiefdom and tell them what to do. If your boss or spouse is riding your ass and you decide to escape to your vehicle, the last thing some people will want to deal with is some granny telling them to relax.

  31. David Butler on September 23, 2022 at 1:51 am

I’m obviously enjoying this podcast. The C++ podcast discussed the importance of computer language garbage collection. Seems Marketing should do its own garbage collection with the purpose of enhancing personal privacy. That probably requires government regulation before Marketing will make the effort. Seems privacy will only be in the periods and stripped from the content. David Butler

  32. David Butler on September 23, 2022 at 1:52 am

Experience is cumulative and after a short time period most experiences are forgettable. Asking 30 days after about a podcast is asking most people to say ‘Duh’. Probably the common response to an experience is to digest it with other experiences within the subconscious. Generally, my response to a podcast (other than comments) is: ‘Next!’. David Butler

I look forward to the assistance of a great AI. Yet only as suggestions, I think both of you are too willing to give up control to the AI. The car telling me it will drive better and taking control, the fridge locking up, these ideas take out or choice, and isn’t our option to choose what makes us human or more free?

  39. David Butler on September 23, 2022 at 2:03 am

Not familiar with the ‘Her’ movie which, if I’m still alive in a few years, I might see on Hulu. I remember the AI movie of this robot boy who was never accepted by his adoptive mom … a robot who pines for her even after the human race becomes extinct. That was a movie worth watching.
