What Is Christian Science

What Is Christian Science

What is a Christian Scientist? I’m not talking about scientists who are also christian, I’m talking about a cult called Christian Science. It’s a very destructive religion, and in this video, I talk about who they are and what they believe.

Christian Science does sometimes work, but not because its scientific or Christian. It is an illustration of the placebo effect, a phenomenon (along with its opposite, the nocebo effect) which is actively being researched and studied. Mrs. Eddy’s writing consists mostly of "word salad", with a few good insights sprinkled in, to give it the flavor of authenticity.
She is probably one of the worst religious writers of all time. Endlessly repetitive, ornate, obscure, and boring.

For the church I went to, they did not refuse medical treatment. They just prayed and believed prayer had about as much use as medicine. So sometimes they get medical treatment, but usually in addition to or after prayer.

Also, yes their doctrine is so confusing that no one in the church could answer my simple questions because they didn’t seem to know either.

They seemed to have much less control tactics as even much of mainstream christianity, so while they have some bizarre aspects, I do not see them as a cult at all.

By your definition of cult all religions are a cult. All the talk of natural selection and how ridiculous CS is.. meanwhile most people are filling themselves with garbage poisoned foods, taking medication to feel normal or for 100 different things… it isn’t a cult. It’s Christianity, preaching faith healing, which is literally what Jesus and his disciples did throughout the Bible. Who are you to judge?

I just was learning about Christian Science for the first time. Yikes! The best analogy I can think of is the Jehovahs Witnesses. Since this channel talks a lot about Jehovahs Witnesses it will be easy to get my point across. One messed up thing about this group is the blood thing. It makes no sense to me at all. Seriously, what is with the blood thing? Modern doctors use proper safety precautions when giving blood transfusions. The main part is screening blood for disease and blood type. If the physical health of a patient improves, then the blood was the right thing to do. I got blood a few years ago. As a result, I got better with no complications and zero regrets. That event may have saved my life. Jehovas Witnesses oppose this due to a clumsy, and I mean really clumsy, attempt at applying some old Bible quote. The clumsiness is like trying to make jewelry with oven mitts on. You are just going to get a mess of string, metal bits and beads. It is hardly anything one would want to adorn themselves with. It gets even worse, because there are cases of Jehovas Witnesses dieng preventable deaths because they were not allowed to get blood transfusions. It is disgusting and horrifying. So Christian Science is like that but worse, so much worse. I am shocked and appalled that this group even has a body count too. Yikes! The Christian Scientists probably wouldn’t approve of the blood thing either. What if a member is bleeding to death? Would praying it away save them now? I think not. Better call 911 and have real doctors take care of that. If any medical person uses science, it would be the mainstream doctors. Since this cult has "science" in the name I like them to prove it. Let’s do double blind experiments on thier faith healing. Let’s see if they do any better than the placebos. Despite my shock, I am glad to learn about this group. It is a good example of what not to do when starting a new religion. I have to explicitly say that members are allowed to do certain things. Some of these things are really basic that should go without saying. My biggest Christian pet peeve is the Amish. So I note that technology including electricity is allowed. I did mention certain medical procedures are allowed. This would be abortion, birth control and blood transfusions. I better note that all mainstream operations are allowed. I do like the list of cult traits in the video. I would like to learn more about that. It sounds helpful.

grew up in CS and when I turned 21, it played a big role in my dad not seeking treatment for congestive heart failure. He later died in Jan 24, 2020. will never forgive CS for that. Even before, I regularly tried to pray away severe colds/flus and it never worked. I was a kid couldn’t understand why my prayer wasn’t enough. When I became a young adult, I finally started getting med treatment (e.g. vaccinations, anti emetics, etc…). That was what helped. Years of being miserable and pukey stopped by science, not prayer. I feel sick whenever I hear "you’re a perfect idea" or some other phrases I associate w the religion.

  13. Potato-phobia • 85 years ago on August 13, 2022 at 12:06 am

Look I’m not a child abuse advocate but the fact that CS parents who kill their kids aren’t charged with child neglect, but those who neglect their kids anyway are, is just bazaar

  14. Jonathan Kurtz on August 13, 2022 at 12:08 am

It’s too bad you don’t know what you are talking about! You should really learn more, before you pretend to know what you are talking about.
Christian Science is simply, learning how to see & heal people as Jesus did. Of course Christian Science is NOT a cult in any way. Nobody is "shunned" or even looked down upon for taking Medicines or, seeinga Doctor. There is a better way to heal, like Jesus did, and many 100s of thousands of verified healings proved. Can a Christian Scientists take Medicine? Absolutely! Nothing is wrong with Medicine or Doctors. They are held in high esteem, for helping people who can not help themselves. But, often times, there is a better option in healing. To realize, like Jesus did, that God is perfection! As God’s own children, we reflect that perfection
As far as membership declining over the years, it’s been declining in most religions. Christian healing doesn’t just happen, and it takes studying. Unfortunately, people in all walks of life, don’t put in the effort. Those who do, see fantastic healings.

Found this through looking at 2nd Great Awakening stuff – I know there’s more to it but seems like people could just fall for anything back then. This, SDA, JW, Mormons all have ties to it.

OK there was a lot of support for abolition and women in leadership, so stopped clock maybe?

Saw through all the BS in by Jr High abd quit going to Chuch in the mid 1960s..And in Christian Scientists belief, Jesus is not the Son of God or did he die on the Cross to redeem our sins.. All the beliefs in Christian Scientist are total contradictions of the Bible , Especially Mary Baker Eddy’s " Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures"

I don’t understand why people of the same faith as me haven’t come to the same conclusion that the week that it took for god to create the universe, the earth, and all life on it was millions of years long. Who in their right mind would think that 6 days for god would be equivalent to 6 human days? What’s more likely the most powerful being in the universe gets tired after working for 6 days or several billon years? I think my fellow Christians are to quick to assume that if it’s not specifically talked about in the bible it didn’t exist. Saying God created all life doesn’t include Dinosaurs or that God hasn’t changed his creations aka Evolution is ridiculous. Do you seriously believe that if God described billons of years or all the knowledge we have today that people of the time would’ve understood it. I’ll get off my soap box, but I just wished I understood the forced quarrel between religion and science two things I care deeply about.

please do not listen to him you can tell he has no idea just by his bias; plus he has taken what he wants you to hear. LOL. been a christian scientist my whole life and he is making it seem fucked hahaha. He has NO idea. I’ve had healings my whole life…so has my aunt. Actual healings, its cool. We aren’t crazy or a cult. Our main thing is love..love others, love yourself as Gods children, we are kind people. And yes, we don’t rely on medical, but you still can, there is no judgement…ive used it, i know many Christian scientists that have, but yes we have healings. it works (as the people he showed described their healings, its fkn legit its crazy) He has no fkn idea. I went to a christian science school and we pray when we are sick, but we can decide to use medication to help if we need… my mum always let me decide. far out, we dont push anyone out of the community. its welcoming, no judgement, infinite love for all, we dont lie or manipulate. our values are love, soul, spirit, truth, principle, mind, Life.

Well science has actually proved that all things are made out of light particles waves of light .. Astro physics
The things is that you can heal with your mind..called placebo effect…and look up Dr Bruce Lipton and Dr Joe dispenza .. epigenetics doctor that actually are medical doctors and have study the effects of Our Minds and thoughts on how our genes express and activate or delete messenger RNA and DNA..the thing is she Also did tried many different medications for her illnesses and she got healed one time by her prayer and or reading the Bible..I don’t think she would be completely against people getting medical treatment ..tho she would like to have taught all people to heal themselves .

I just got to the story of the woman who had her identity stolen, and said her only identity is with God. Well… that’s great if she’s praying, but for the rest of the world, you need an identity that other people can reference. Your physical characteristics, your name, birth date, SS#, etc. => whatever is needed. Other people can’t identity someone from their relationship to God. Also, her unfocused eyes and fixed smile were BEYOND creepy.

I remember my Mom telling me abou going to a church which believed if you got sick, you must of sinned against God. My Great Aunt attended the church. Being, the church didn’t believe in doctors, my great Aunt wouldn’t go see a doctor when she found a lump on her Breast.
The lump was FOURTH STAGEIV BREAST CANCER.
She suffered with severe pain, wouldn’t let any doctor give her morphine.
My Mom always wondered if Nellie tried to figure out what sin she had committed.
    She died.ate age 46 in 1936.

  36. Laura C on August 13, 2022 at 12:29 am

Just because you don’t understand Christianity doesn’t make this interpretation based on it word salad. Jesus was essentially God as man, therefore connects us. The wages of sin are death, because God punishes our sin this way; God is good, as in just, and gives us what we deserve, like a good father would punish a child who is bad. Jesus AKA the lamb of God dying on the cross was a sacrifice and paid for our sins; he defeated sin, which is essentially death, therefore saved us: we can live in eternal peace with acknowledgement of this act, which is synonymous w acknowledgement of God’s plan and God himself. You are ignorant and arrogant, and I can’t take this critique I was otherwise interested in seriously because you clearly don’t.

Jim Henson was a Christian Scientist. He died due to toxicity from a cold virus. Basically, toxicity means a buildup of residual chemicals in the aftermath of a white blood cell destroying a pathogen. For most people, especially if you’re using medicine, this is something no one would have to worry about it. In Jim’s case, his cold was extreme, something that would’ve probably felt like he was dying due to his infection. Jim survived the cold, but he had so many toxic chemicals in his body for so long that his body couldn’t keep up with the cleanup. It was a 100% avoidable death. If he had taken even just a little bit of medicine, he probably would’ve lived another 10 to 20 years.
