What Is Sin?… As Defined by the Bible and Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ was crucified because of one simple word: sin. But what exactly is sin? It may not be a word we think much about, yet, God gave His only begotten Son to suffer through an excruciatingly painful death so that everyone in the world could be forgiven and cleansed of sin. Obviously, it is important–something we need to know. So, let’s see what the Bible says because there are a bunch of weird ideas about what sin is coming from the minds of men.
But the Bible gives a clear and simple definition which is what we’ll discuss in this video. Then we’ll build on that definition with what Jesus Christ taught.
But before we get into it, if you are new to this channel, we make these videos to explain Bible topics in an easy to understand way. We believe the Bible is the foundation of truth, and everyone can benefit from it. So give us a like, and help spread the Word.
First, let’s define sin. The English word sin simply means, “an immoral act considered to be a transgression against divine law.” Both the Hebrew and Greek words translated sin (Strong’s H2398 Hata and G266 Hamartia) indicate: “To miss the mark, to err or be mistaken, to do or go wrong”; “To wander from, or violate God’s law.”
The clearest Biblical definition we’ll use to build on in this video is found in 1 John 3:4: It says, “Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.” The KJV says it this way, providing a little more clarity, “Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.”
In other words, sin is the violation, or breaking, of the law. But what law? This is clearly not referring to traffic or civil laws outside of the Bible. Neither is this referring to the hundreds of additional laws prescribed by the Jewish Rabbis over the years that Jesus Himself condemned. So what law is it talking about? The Bible gives the answer.
James makes it clear, “He who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” Now if you do not commit adultery, but you do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.” (James 2:11) The law being referenced is the Ten Commandments.
In another place, the Apostle Paul said, “…I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, “You shall not covet.” (Romans 7:7) Again, directly referencing the Ten Commandments.
The Bible’s primary definition of sin is the breaking of the Ten Commandments. The Bible does show that sin includes showing partiality (James 2:9), not doing good (James 4:17), a proud heart (Prov 21:4) acting against faith (Romans 14:23) and various other offenses, but the Ten Commandments form the core of God’s law, and all sin can be traced back to breaking one or more of the Ten Commandments.
Building on this idea, Jesus explained that sin was not JUST physically breaking one of the Ten Commandments, but rather, there was an even deeper, spiritual component. In His sermon on the mount, He said, “You have heard it was said… ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” Jesus was saying it wasn’t just the physical act of adultery that constituted sin. Sin was committed when the idea of breaking the law was entertained in the mind. In the same sermon He said, “You have heard that it was said… ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’” But He went on to explain that even the attitude of hate toward another person is breaking the spirit, or full intent, of the law, putting them in danger of judgment.Jesus showed that sin actually begins in the mind.
This same concept is shown in James 1:15, “when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.” (James 1:15) In short, the primary biblical definition of sin is the breaking of the Ten Commandments. This happens whether we break the letter or the spirit of the law by our actions, words, thoughts, or even wrong motivations.
And at some point, all of us have broken one of the ten commandments, either in the letter or in the spirit of the law. This is why we read, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)
This is why we need the sacrifice of Jesus Christ to cover our sins. Because even though we are to repent and turn away from sin, all of the obedience in the world cannot make us right with God. Only “the blood of Jesus Christ… cleanses us from all sin.” (1 John 1:7)

Sin as defined in the back of the Bible, be it whatever version you read; (n) moral evil; transgression of or rebellion against Gods laws. (v) to commit an offense or fault against God; to break Gods laws. Seeing how Jesus Christ was God made man and he handed out 222 commandments in the Gospels and a total of 1050 in the entire New Testament/Covenant. . . Sin is basically doing anything He told us not to do in the New Testament or not doing something He commanded us to do in the New Testament!!! As He said in John 14:15 thru the end of the chapter. . . "Those that Love me keep my commandments!" A lot of you need to quit letting other people tell you what the Bible and things in it mean and do the reading yourself and let the Holy Spirit discern the word of God for you as Jesus commanded each and everyone of us to do!!!

You are actually wrong a person can be pure enough for heaven that if Grace did not come he would find heaven. People like Enoch and Elijah both were sinners yet they found heaven. Grace came because none of you seek the face of God for the understanding to depart from evil and walk in your double minds of good and evil doing both and God made a offering for you to cleanse you. Jesus did not need to suffer and die for us for this whole wide world can be right with God. The verse those that thrist after righteousness will have their fill as the whole world goes their own way smiling at God who is alone holy and pure saying thanks for your son God. By understanding the Lords ways a person can be pure enough for heaven. Christians do not love God, they love what he did for them. They all could care less God is alone holy and good all thinking sins of their past is what dames them to hell, when it is the future that does. You continue to be sinners and walk your own ways still doing evil thinking it is impossible to be pure as God and holy for you all think the holy ghost is a weak feeble spirit and Satan has to be crowned God of this world. Jesus said it in scripture with Christ all things are possible with Christ who strengthens you as you scratch your head it is impossible to be right with God for the holy ghost knows its place before the god of this world.

I will walk one day to show this world Grace is not needed for me, I only use it because it is shed. But a normal lambs blood would have been all that is needed for my sins and my future when the Lord takes me will be in his hands as you all will shout Blasphemy we love it only God is good so he can come down and show us his glory of rising again. I will walk just as pure as the living God and just as holy.

What law? The word ‘Law" found in the New Testmant is often the Hebrew word, "Torah". Torah is the first 5 books of the Bible. These books are the instructions for life for all who wish to know and follow Yahweh and they include God’s laws to mankind. The 10 commandments are only a summary of all the laws found in Torah. To know God is to know what He likes and does not like. To really know God you must study His Torah.

If breaking any one of the 10 commandments is sin, then most of Western Christianity lives in sin, for most do not keep Sabbath. This is only one obvious lawless dead that is easy to point out. Western Christianity has little understanding of who God is or His will. Why? Because they don’t read the foundational books of their so called faith. Again, read and study Torah and you will come to know the TRUE God of the Bible. Be sure that I am not teaching salvation by works. Obedience to our Father is not works, it is duty and responsibility just as it would be to our earthly fathers.

The Ten Commandments is NOT the Law; it is but a subsection of the Law that YHVH gave through Moses. YHVH ceased speaking the Torah after the 10th Commandment because the people could no longer bear hearing it and they begged for an intercessor, Moses a type of Yeshua, to go and receive the rest of God’s instruction and bring it back to them. Moses did so and ascended the mountain and returned with the two tablets of Testimony and the rest of YHVH’s Statutes, Ordinances, and Judgement which He inscribed in the Book of the Law for us to obey forever.

Teaching obedience to the 10 Commandments alone is deception. The Ten is but the summation of the Total, much like the 2 ‘Love’ Commandments are a summation of the Ten.

  24. @sgm4545 on July 23, 2025 at 12:21 am

You video is almost perfect! Its not just 10 commandements! All of the commandments were given to Moses.

SIN is what you think wrongly , in other words, to think Holy , you must think Good things, Always, moment to moment, when you wake up , you must think Good things, When you start thinking Bad things , thats when Sin comes in you and in your mind also , and you start doing bad things SIN IS THE OPPOSITE OF GOODNESS

  31. @amariyah12 on July 23, 2025 at 12:26 am

The law is more than just the 10 Commandments. The whole book of Leviticus covers God’s laws and anywhere God spoke with a command, it was considered law. See where Jesus spoke in John 10:34, quoting from Psalms 82:6. The 10 simply sum up the rest of the Torah which dives deep into the specific laws of how to love one another and how to Image God.

Jesus was crucified because he was considered a threat to peace and stability by the Roman rulers of the time.Jesus was like various religious groups in China , Iran and some other countries
Sin has zero to do with the death of Jesus .this was appended after his death by his followers to give meaning for his loss….amen

Most of the Christian world ignores the 1st commandant ever given, the 4th commandment, was given on the first seventh day at Creation,.. Genesis 2:3

  41. @truthseeker6532 on July 23, 2025 at 12:38 am

    1. Sin = Lack of Control = Childish Ways = Unable to follow God fully……Lawlessness.
    2. Sin does not allow one to be an adult. An adult must be able to follow God fully.
    3. Since Adam and Eve test by God, the Earth has always been children with one exception of an Adult = Jesus, and he laid down the perfect example of an Adult for mankind.

  42. @soybeanfarmer4576 on July 23, 2025 at 12:40 am

Buyer beware here. The lawlessness or iniquity in 1John 3:4 translated from anomia in Greek is not just the 10 commandments. It is the Torah. In which is the same stated by Paul in Romans 3 and 7. Love your God and love your neighbor are sub headings because there are no definitions on how to: 1-4 of the 10 commandments tell you how to Love God and 5-10 tell you how to Love your neighbor. The rest of the LAW or TORAH tells you how to live and when you transgress the law…IT IS SIN. Remember Jesus says that the rest of the LAW(TORAH) Hangs from these very 2 subheadings listed above. I’ll stick with what Jesus says instead of mainstream Christianity.

The Lord placed us on my heart.
When Adam and eve were created, they were sin less But when Sin did enter their bodies which was not meant for Sin It was like cancer.
And it slowly started killing us. That’s why God had to do all the things he had to start doing to start cleansing us again. Then Jesus came and died for us. He came to us to start doctrine and to help Us with our sin Although we will still die in sin Cause death is sin But we will regain new bodies that will be set free once again. Like Adam and eve the way it should have been. To have Sin no more. And I would like to thank Jesus Christ for his grace of saving us.
Only through him, We Will have eternal life. Amen.

  44. @ChristopherAlsruhe-si9ff on July 23, 2025 at 12:40 am

Foundationally, Sin is not glorifying God. Rom. 3:23
Righteousness is glorifying God and Jesus. John 7:18; 20:21

  45. @yengeeric5286 on July 23, 2025 at 12:41 am

    Whoa!

What an in-depth breakdown of a single word: SIN! But please, sir, I would like to learn from you – what is the difference between sin and carelessness?

I have witnessed people bring calamities upon themselves and their families as a result of their carelessness and they suffered as if they sinned but they sinned not. Just like the case of Jephthah in the book of Judges 11.

    Thank you!
