Toddler Discipline Strategies To Keep You From Going Crazy | Dad University

Toddler discipline is one of the most difficult topics for parents. Dealing with a toddler and understanding how to manage situations when they come up is something that nearly all parents struggle with. In this video, Jason provides some specific toddler discipline strategies you can use to with your child.

Whether your toddler is defiant or your toddler refuses to listen, it’s so important that we understand how much we actually are in control how we respond. Toddler discipline methods are really more about how we handle ourselves during these situations versus us doing something to the toddler. Most parents associate toddler discipline with punishment. Jason also talks about how punishment doesn’t teach children the correct behavior. Check out the video and let us know any issues you are having with your own toddler discipline.

my toddler doesn’t even understand that I’m being understanding. there are things that cannot be determined by them… like for example throwing himself on the floor because hes apparently starving and asking for a specific food and after its made he wants to go outside?? what then? when he’s doing this about literally EVEYTHING

  7. @joemcguts1962 on May 4, 2025 at 8:51 pm

how to ignore the behaviour if the kid escalates it to hitting, scratching, emtpying all toy drawers, throwing them through the whole room, eventually intentionally pissing on the floor and bed subsequently? xD

My dad and mom whipped my *** and I listened…was a great kid who got great grades and was rarely in trouble at school (literally 2 or 3 times in 12 years) when my parents spoke I listened I never talked back and was always respectful to my parent and other adults when my parents we not around they would constantly get compliments from other parents on how well behaved we were ….so how does it not work?

  10. @gigicolada on May 4, 2025 at 8:54 pm

I’m here because I see no point in punishing my 2 year old just yet. I also wouldn’t feel better about it either. I just wish he’d listen to me and not run from me when we go out in public. I need guidance.

Some of this is super beneficial and true but a lot of the times they just need to be spanked if needed not super bad but a swat and always say what you mean and do what you say and try to take a breath before dealing with something that makes you angry

Most important advice you ever going to get….
*Do Not Wait* until you have a toddler age child to start implementing discipline.

  14. @seriousteddy6225 on May 4, 2025 at 8:56 pm

Thank you ,I really appreciate your advices but your tone of voice is very loud… too loud

I was with an abuse and absent minded parent and now that I’m with someone that has a kid I’m trying to be a different kind of parent for her God knows it’s hard we’ll see how this goes in a few weeks.

The worst thing is when my toddler knows what "no" and "go" mean but doesn’t talk in sentences, and it’s very aggravating. I also have a two-year-old; they are close in age, but he is autistic and nonverbal (level 3). He goes up to my three-year-old son and grabs him because of sensory issues. He doesn’t understand his brother is autistic, and they don’t play much because of it. I also have a one-year-old girl, my youngest. It’s chaos with my three-year-old because he wants to get into everything and do everything he’s not allowed to do. I have spanked him, but it doesn’t work; he will look you in the eye and do it again, to the point where I have to sit him down with me. I’m new to being a parent; I had my kids close in age, almost back-to-back. Any tips with an autistic child and two who aren’t? Thanks.

I snapped at my daughter earlier… I just wanted to get caught up on chores and I usually try to drop what I’m doing to give her at least a little attention even if I’m multitasking. This video is honestly making me feel better because I didn’t snap until her 4th meltdown of the day. I am trying and this makes me feel better.

My toddler directly disobeys me and yells at me and hits me.

  19. @sharonkasiroori300 on May 4, 2025 at 9:01 pm

I feel awful for the amount of yelling I’ve done on my 3year old. She is a handful, but im on this video because i want to fix my relationship with her before i lose her friendship or damage her emotionally. I love her but i have a hard time when it comes to the yelling. I feel like a bad mom

  20. @Nathan-xr4gv on May 4, 2025 at 9:02 pm

I guarantee there is no controlled study on spanking children. So, you can’t say it doesn’t work.

  21. @robertmiller5935 on May 4, 2025 at 9:02 pm

Couldn’t have said it better. Spanking doesn’t do anything for the kid, some parents like it because it makes THEM feel better. News flash, this isn’t about you, it’s about your kid

  22. @OliveHello on May 4, 2025 at 9:04 pm

Anyone else having problems with your wife because of your daughter ..or because of the different ways ypu want to discipline your child ? I think thats the worse part of it all ..as if dealing with marriage isnt challenging enough now our 4 year old is adding to it

Child: “I’m not listening to you”
Dad: “keep it up and you will end up like your brother “
    Child: “dad i don’t have a brother”
    Dad: “exactly”

  27. @gotsm9959 on May 4, 2025 at 9:13 pm

I just tell the child about the fun stuff they can do growing up like learning about making colors but first they have to take breaks from play time and have some healthy food, hydration and hygen because taking care of ourselves is fun.

  28. @red_revenant770 on May 4, 2025 at 9:14 pm

I don’t want to have a children and yet this was recommended to me, I’ve seen so many reasons why so no children

Sometimes parenting feels overwhelming, but this book Raising Warriors: Preparing Your Children for a Godly Life reminds you that with God’s help, it’s not only possible- it’s rewarding. I’ve been so encouraged by every chapter

  35. @andrewkillom5623 on May 4, 2025 at 9:25 pm

Thank you. I needed this, I feel like I’ve been striking out with my toddler. She’s so beautiful but can be so bossy, demanding and say such hurtful things. I really needed to hear this.

  36. @Ann-9706 on May 4, 2025 at 9:29 pm

    Thank you

  37. @Paladin1776-v6e on May 4, 2025 at 9:31 pm

Absolutely wrong on all counts. You cannot reason and talk though consequences with a two year old who can’t even speak full sentences yet! Spanking is also prescribed by God, not some liberal indoctrinated by sociologists.

  38. @marybriscoe2328 on May 4, 2025 at 9:37 pm

How to respond to a 5 yr old who is frequently telling the adult(s) in his life that “xyz” is THEIR” fault! “It”’s not HIS fault!

  39. @brendab2946 on May 4, 2025 at 9:38 pm

Punishment doesn’t work for mine either. Talking them thru it and explaining does help
