Straightforward Career and Job Advice
Straightforward Career and Job Advice
It’s all too common for us to think of our work as either the thing that gives us our identity, or something to be avoided at all cost, or some unhealthy combination of those two misleading philosophies. In this video, Fr. Mike aims to bring inspiration to our everyday jobs by showing us how our labor can be a way to share in God’s nature. By striving to look past humanity’s brokenness and sin, we can move beyond seeing work as a burden, and see how every act of work has dignity.

Mike, can you make a video on Cardinal Newman? Anything you want us to know about him and his work
Love your humor and insights Father! You are a blessing! Thank you
I don’t agree. This glorifies busywork and nonwork that causes damage to our planet, as well as the wealth transfer from the poor to the elite via corporations.
Please respond if you see this Father.
Our financial system is based on usury. The central bank creates money out of nothing and loans it at interest. The money to pay back the interest does not exist. This has several effects:
–There can only either be periods of unsustainable growth of debt, or else rapid inflation to make the debt easier to pay.
–Most businesses take out loans to get started. The money to pay back all those loans doesn’t exist. Therefore, at least some businesses have to go bankrupt in order for others to pay off their initial loans. This results in unnaturally high unemployment.
–Since the USA has the world reserve currency, a great deal of our inflation is exported overseas in order to finance the trade deficit. A sustained trade deficit would be impossible without inflation. This makes things appear artificially expensive in the USA, which ruins domestic industries (uncompetitive high price of goods) and encourages immigration (artificially high wages for BS jobs).
–Those who already own assets get richer, and those who don’t own assets find them increasingly impossible to afford (inflation is built into the system).
Father Mike, you truly are a Blessing!!
I really needed this one. Thank you.
Awesome ! You are one of the divine Jesus I encountered. ThNks a lot father.
Regards from Connecticut, US 🙂
The greatest downside to work is driving. When I am stuck in traffic, I feel depressed.
Brilliant
Very cool wisdom! Rad beard too Fr Mike!
I feel my like my job is very meaningless. I want to quit, even if is for less pay.
Excellent
What about sex workers, crooks, drug dealers etc. ?
Too many people are living above their means and are greedy. They have no patience and aren’t grateful and thankful for what they have. They don’t know the meaning of a dollar.
Dude you gotta lose the beard, it’s not working. You are way too handsome to be growing a beard like that man!
Every job has dignity because we do it for God
Father I’ve labourd 18 years for our country , my grand fathers gave up their tomorrow for my today.

When your work is to deforest the country to sell the wood.
This video reminds me of John Maynard Keynes paying people to dig holes and then fill them back in.
Keep your own standards very high but when it comes to others, keep your expectations at zero or you will be disappointed.
This message is too generic. The industrial revolution is diabolic to turn human beings into automatons serving only materialism. It is Christian to avoid such a socio-economy. The Christian work is in farmer-craftsman socio-economy. But, in this diabolic world, that is very hard to find as every need and want of human beings is being made by the industrialized system in order to turn everything into a machine in which only numbers matter and not people.
This was something that I was having trouble with in the last 12 months. I am currently a college student and it took me forever to decide that and I have switched my major already within my first semester and now I am thinking of changing it again, going to a different school, or even quitting college altogether. I have a lot of interests and I am so fixated on trying to pursue the career that is perfect for me. This talk really helped me understand what my parents were telling me before when they said, "You don’t have to love your job or try to fit in to the perfect one." I still feel jittery about the discussion and am uncomfortable with my sense of work ethic and determination as well as commitment to a specific field. This video definitely helped even though I am still unsure if I should keep going (I am an accounting and finance major btw) because my grades are terrible and I have an idea of succeeding elsewhere. Maybe that is just part of my ego that I need to overcome.
Okay, he’s the coolest priest I’ve ever seen! 🙂
I think good job/vocation advice for someone that might think that their interest or chosen job might not involve Christ traditionally, you can find a way to use Christ in anything. If you’re interested in something that’s not exactly seminary, don’t be discouraged! You can always involve Christ in any way.
Work, work, work. Being The King isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
Holy insights! Thank you, Fr Mike.
Laziness and boredom creates mental illness.
Thank you Father. Just the answer I was looking for.
Thanks, Fr. Mike. I am 64 years old and I needed to hear that.
I needed to hear this. Thank you so much! God bless!!!!
When your work is to propagandize people to atheistic Communism.
I really appreciated this video. Such a good way to look at the work that we do.
A lot of work is exploitation or exploiting others. What are your thoughts on that?
I definitely needed to hear this now; especially as a recent graduate during COVID-19.
Right now, the only steady job I have been able to get my hands on has been at a local Home Depot. I’m a Lot Associate part-time who’s going to be soon transferred to the electrical department.
At first, I felt pretty much robbed after going to school for so long and hoping to get a fulfilling, full-time job that pays at least living wage (with benefits) right after graduation.
So for me to only be able to get part-time, minimum-wage, shift-based work for high-schoolers and students that also required me to have a connection… That got to me for awhile.
But honestly, after awhile, the work did become rather fulfilling, and I found myself enjoying my leisurely time a lot more and appreciating the money I earned because I worked hard and well to get every penny of my pay.
Honestly, if I never had to worry about money, and could live on my own without having to live from paycheck to paycheck, I would probably keep the job for a long time.
Hopefully once the pandemic is over I will be able to find a steady full-time job that can help me live on my own. Otherwise, I might look at the Army for some work.
Definitely one of the best, if not the best, perspectives I’ve heard on work.
I enjoy all kinds of work rather paid or not. It’s the feeling that I get knowing my body was made to do labors. Tough or not i have have faith god is there by me. I give thanks for the way he made me.
Isnt God in the wine business? I mean scripture does tend to mention a vineyard a few hundred times.
I began to pray over taking a new job. It is a teaching job at my church’s school instead of the job teaching at a public school for 10k more. I would be taking a huge cut. My friend says I am wasting my time praying over this. When should we ask for God’s input if it isn’t when making life altering decisions?
