Can we sing a song with no reference to God or Jesus?
The song choices one is a bit misleading though.
We had a discussion with our worship leaders and one of them said they prefer lyrically deep songs and the other said they like ones that go round and round with not many words because it allows them to get into a more meditative worship state.
My point, there is room for both.
I prefer ones with deeper lyrics myself. 😉

Worship leaders should focus on worshiping themselves and not trying to coerce people into worship. The Holy Spirit doesn’t need our help to do that.
Stepping forward and backward and swaying from side to side on stage, is a huge distraction and appears to be copying what everyone else does. That’s not necessary. Just be yourself and worship in spirit and in truth and let the Holy Spirit do the rest.

The whole purpose of worship is to break up the fallow ground preparing hearts to receive the Word of God.
Most people at my church don’t sing because they don’t the song or can’t sing the lyrics. Most are just silent because the worship team and music often drums out those in the congregation. Just saying….

We have to stay away from songs with too many words a congregation cannot sing with you when you have long lyrics: it is better to sing repetition (when it has meaning) you can do more saying Jesus we love you than two three long lyrics that can not be remembered…

#4 hits a nerve for me, and even more insidious is the subsequent prayer for forgiveness for those who didn’t sing, clap, or raise their hands because they just couldn’t get over themselves or some such.

I love the point about praying before the service. Praying with the congregation as well, to bring together the congregation. It’s the essence of unity and humility that’s missing in modern worship services. And those who struggle with bright lights and loudness due to health reasons are left completely out. I don’t understand how this entertainment mode of worship services continues. But I would love to be able to be drawn to tears in worship again.

Almost all worship teams are nice people, there are just certain ones that I think need to be less serious and more uplifting.
