Straightforward Career and Job Advice

Straightforward Career and Job Advice

It’s all too common for us to think of our work as either the thing that gives us our identity, or something to be avoided at all cost, or some unhealthy combination of those two misleading philosophies. In this video, Fr. Mike aims to bring inspiration to our everyday jobs by showing us how our labor can be a way to share in God’s nature. By striving to look past humanity’s brokenness and sin, we can move beyond seeing work as a burden, and see how every act of work has dignity.

Fr. Mike is also a presenter in these faith formation programs from Ascension:

I do feel way too many people confuse career and vocation. Vocation is first, Love and serve God to become a Saint, and second either religious orders or marriage.

If marriage the primary aspect of work is to provide for the family.

If your work has a positive effect on the world that is great, but too many people seek meaning in work rather than God and Family.

So career really shouldn’t be exalted as a source of identity or purpose. as much as people do.

If you think the purpose of life is to ensure that you keep living and have leisure you have drastically misunderstood scripture

Jobs aren’t objectively at the same level: there’re the most important ones as well as the least important ones. The "sameness" only applies to the dignity of the abstract, but fruitful, concept of "person"

I’m 2nd year accounting student. I have a law major called business law, our atty prof wants us to memorize back to back summary for quiz, then study half of the syllabus, almost 10 case studies all for the recitation on Saturday. I know I can’t do it, iI still have other majors. Every Sunday I’m so tired to wake up that I missed the morning mass that’s why I wasn’t able to attend mass. I spend less time with my family because I prioritize study. Idk what to do, I still haven’t memorized all and studied all, I’m so doomed… Now I’m worried for my future, I’m afraid,, I wanna hold on to God but I’m scared.. I lost my faith,, will anyone give some peace of advise?

"All our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away."
"I will expose your righteousness and your works, and they will not benefit you."
    Isaiah

I agree with the video’s sentiment, but remember, labor is in vain if we try to justify ourselves with it

I am going into my final year in ME. After I graduate and get a job, I will apply for membership of ECEF (Engineering and Construction Evangelical Fellowship), so I can continue to use this platform to share my faith and gather with other Christians in the field.

That’s a good video! It is very important for any person to find something to strive for and fight for no matter what the circumstances. Once you set the right goal for yourself, making decisions will be easy and fun. What used to seem like an excruciating chore will turn into an enjoyable activity. Go where your labour will be needed! Go where there is money and where your work will be decently paid! Sooner or later you will have to co-operate with people of different nationalities and cultures. To make your business successful, you should learn a foreign language. I would like to recommend to you Yuriy Ivantsiv’s workshop "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips on learning foreign language". This book will help you to structure and organise your individual language learning process, will give you the opportunity to independently determine the methodology of language learning, which will become interesting and unburdensome. In this amazing book everyone will find a lot of useful information: how to learn foreign languages, how to memorise information, how to deal with culture shock, what to pay attention to when travelling to another country. I am convinced that the book "Polyglot Notes" should be in the bag of every business person, school and college student, and tourist. The most important thing is that the book gives a good motivation. Don’t be afraid to do something to realise your dreams! If people realised that fears have no connection with reality, everyone would live a much better life. Thanks to the author of the channel for the informative and useful video. Your videos motivate me and give me new ideas!

Try working in a data and/or content production center where hours are long (100+), pay is dismal, managers are awful, promotion non-existent, and burnout rate HIGH. Oh and guess what, the more/better you do ["for the glory of Gd"], the more work you get. Nothing fixed my job other than quitting and finding another. Sorry no amount of devoting labor to the Lord fixed that!

  16. @ALHTPKT-77 on August 29, 2025 at 12:59 am

I would rather go to work and stay busy then sit with an idle mind and think about how much I hate God’s rules

Wow, all this while I kept believing that priesthood was the only work that truly pleased God. Thank you for opening my eyes. The ‘cosmic worship’ part really made me understand that all work is worship, when it’s presented to the Lord.

If your job is causing you deep sadness, should you try to leave it? Or should you stay and offer it up as part of your cross?

Catholic social teaching says we should not support exploitative enterprises so I get OCD about working for the right company, etc.

Thanks for this. I still have a question after all of this:

According to the Bible, life (living) is the combination of "Work, leisure and Love" or it is something else?

  31. @eveclosson3333 on August 29, 2025 at 1:12 am

Genuine question: what if someone is doing a job that is clearly sinful, like prostitution or drug dealing? Does that work have any dignity? Or is it not counted as work?

  32. @celiaescalante on August 29, 2025 at 1:15 am

The gardeners, the fishermen and the carpenters. God gives people these vocations. God gives everyone their vocations. Jesus is the host, the flesh and blood, the son of God, the prince of peace, and the prophet from far away planet that was here instead 2,000+ years ago. we should all look in the mirror and find Jesus deep inside, layer thru layer, down to the very core, the heart of our very being, the soul must be recognized and boom! Heal the onion. Heal your layers, Onions!

Well, back to work for me then

  34. @ΜυρτώΓληγόρη on August 29, 2025 at 1:17 am

i have never thought about it this way…. work has meaning because we (humans) are doing it… so the work doesn’t have meaning on its own, but because humans are doing it, it has… or at least it has dignity… This makes me think of this: "I wasn’t created to mold into a specific job position, but different job positions were made for each human to express their inner God-given tendency to work in their unique way." I wasn’t made for work, work was made for me. That’s interesting. . .

  35. @Senoritalejandra on August 29, 2025 at 1:17 am

☺️ Amazing! I love having a career! Do you have any more Christian advice for young professionals?

Perhaps, the greatest satisfaction from work is to create.

In reality it’s nearly impossible to live this out. 99 percent of Americans only work to live. There is no leisure. We cannot afford it. I believe that is injustice.

  42. @77agape on August 29, 2025 at 1:29 am

this is helpful, work is dignified because we do it, even if it’s menial… refreshing insights.

  43. @noneofyourbusinessna740 on August 29, 2025 at 1:31 am

why does ecclesiastes say its all meaningless ? Ecclesiastes 2:11, from the New International Version, states: "Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun."
