The Right's Fight to Make America a Christian Nation | CBS Reports

Freedom of religion is enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. But the role that religious beliefs should play in public life has never been more contentious. As part of the Speaking Frankly series, this CBS Reports documentary explores the fusion of faith and politics in a movement that envisions the U.S. as a Christian nation.

These right wing "christians" are lunatics. CALL THEM OUT.

Religion is a choice, it can not be forced. Or jammed down another’s throat. Everyone gets to make a choice…right or wrong. In all of life’s choices. God’s gift is free, not forced. To be shared but the choice still remains yours. Nope those who came to the United States came to be free to worship in the ways they wanted, to not be forced to worship. Like in Europe. You have to let , the person make the choice. And it has to be done with love not hate. What so called christians, are pushing is sinful, and so wrong. Get off your soapboxes, and let your life show the way. Yes worship how you choose…not the way your forced to. Quietly, calmly, without force, with choice. With prayer, you do know that if your living in sin…your prayers are not heard or answered. Everything must be done with a right heart. Yes some things are wrong and sinful but you can not and should not force your religion down anyone’s throat. Remember it’s a gift…salvation is a gift.

“One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.”

Fast forward a few years from now (or sooner) at this trajectory, and only white people will be allowed to be Christians.

  11. sandra morey on May 25, 2022 at 8:34 pm

My DNA is not christian. There were people here before the Pilgrims. They were not christians. In the founding documents there is a very clear line separating church and state. As a 7 year old
in a new public school I was sent home with a copy of "Onward Christian Soldiers" & told to have it memorized the next day. I showed it to my mother who was immediately in the Principal’s office. I wound up being in a class action law suit that went to the Supreme Court in 1947 or 1948 & we won. We were not intended to be a Christian nation. We were intended to be a secular nation although many religious mottos etc have been pushed through. John Adams would hardly recognize us.

Didn’t we just spend 20 years and several trillion dollars bombing a bunch of religious fanatics who repress women and wouldn’t support an elected national government? Let’s try the same with some Megachurches.

"…..a lot of people want, but I don’t want it, my parents don’t want it….that’s why I’m fighting so hard to keep it a Christian nation"….sounds like the core principle of being a Christian. forcing your religion on others.

  20. Daniel Napoli on May 25, 2022 at 8:50 pm

Would they be crying if teams were bowing twice mecca. What if you had rabbis rocking back and forth? No they want America to be Christian. Poor souls don’t realize that you can’t legislate fath . faith is God given and should be based on a PERSONAL relationship with the almighty.
These preachers and churches are merely cashing in on the current trends. Follow the money.

  27. Kevin Myers on May 25, 2022 at 9:01 pm

weird. didnt barack obama fund the muslim brotherhood in egypt? isnt the left embracing antisemitic conspiracy theories from omar and tlaib? trafficking in soviet-style collectivist rhetoric to demonize their enemies?

the left fetishizes christianity to de-legitimize america. but humans are tribal in nature. the left worships the government and will utilize violence to defending the ruling class.

we have seen the dumbing down of america as the decline in religous values have increased. i am not religious but i rather people believe in a higher power than invest their entire personality into the state.

  28. Justo Reguero on May 25, 2022 at 9:02 pm

Scientology, buddidts, hundus, and much more!

  31. Tom Jowers on May 25, 2022 at 9:03 pm

CBS and Affiliates, you can’t be serious with your expose’ here. The religious adherents in this country know exactly who you media people are and wouldn’t give you two seconds of proper interview time.
Reality is most of the religious people in this country want to practice their religion alone and in peace without your Government interference let alone trying to change the Country into some sort of Christian nation as you put it.
Sure, you can get some of the religious clergy who will openly want to convert the country, but the numbers we are talking about are so small, it’s so very insignificant to even make an attempt with a national story such as this. In fact, the push for turnng Americans into vegans is LARGER than the religious’ push to turn the country into a Christian nation.
I think you are doing your network a serious dis-service with expose’s like this. Most religious people I know are just trying to live their lives day to day.

Christian nation is music to my ears. Hopefully they’ll pick up their swords and strike down the wickedness plaguing this land. Jesus said he didn’t come to bring peace but a sword.

  34. EV Review on May 25, 2022 at 9:05 pm

America was not founded on Christianity…there were already people here and they had their own religious beliefs

  35. dehsa on May 25, 2022 at 9:05 pm

Sorry. Not buying it. The "right " is fighting for the illusion-not the real thing.

  36. Bryan Gedbaw on May 25, 2022 at 9:09 pm

Wow there’s a whole lot to talk about here. I’ll just start by openly saying I’m a Christian, and this is like the 3rd video of this type I’ve watched recently so I have some things to get off my chest. With that in mind I agree with many of the arguments based around pushing one’s beliefs or weaponizing one’s faith and I 100% agree with the separation of Church and State. The unfortunate reality is that Christianity has really taken a bad rap due to the misuse and misunderstanding of the words "evangelical" and "evangelicalism"; both derivatives of evangelism. "Evangelism is just one beggar telling another beggar where to find bread"- Dr. D.T. Niles. For Christians, it’s about fulfilling the Great Commission, which is the last instruction given by Jesus to his disciples (Matthew 28:16-20). The problem is that somewhere along the way (Mega)Churches realized there was a whole lot of money to be made in evangelism, just ask Joel Osteen. As a Christian I am supposed to tell everyone about my faith and my savior, however it’s not within my power to change their heart and certainly not by force, the Bible is VERY clear about this. It becomes oppression when we try to change people or things that we can’t change or that don’t want to change. I think most people understand the basic principal taught about God being in control, whether you’re a Christian or not, I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase. Many of the proclamations made by evangelical leaders are rooted in fear which completely undermines God’s control if you’re truly living a faith based life. If these ‘leaders’ knew anything at all about the Bible, particularly the book of Revelation, they would understand you can’t make everyone a Christian and the world is going to end regardless of what you do. I find it odd that Christians spend so much time worried about the end of the world, trying to figure out if the prophecies are coming true, identifying the mark of the beast, etc. If you think you’re living in the end times, that means the Rapture has already happened (and I have some bad news for you). I could go on about backwoods militias and preppers that say they’re rooted in Christianity, but I digress. Personally, I try to carry the message in the way I behave and the way I treat others. I fail at this all the time, I’m not perfect and would never claim to be… If the Bible teaches nothing else, even to the non-believer, it is to be humble. There’s nothing humble about forcing others to agree with you.

Christians have learned that power can be more efficiently wielded with a sword called politics. Not accepting the proselytizing of Christians wanting your money, loyalty, and obedience does not mean they are oppressing them and their Christian desires for power. The marriage of religion and politics found a home in the Republican Party. A party no longer Republican but a cult of personality.

  48. JamesRadnus on May 25, 2022 at 9:21 pm

I like Joe Kennedy’s part. As an agnostic I see no reason why someone would not be allowed to take a knee for this sport. If he’s comfortable with it it’s all fine by me. The school board could ask him not to force his religion upon his students but denying him this small thing…? That I dont share his beliefs doesnt make him worse than me in my eyes
