Ready to quit a job? While it’s tempting to leave with little to no notice, gracefully resigning from a position is key to maintaining your connections. Former employers can serve as references or even future business partners, so it’s valuable to know how to quit your job with professionalism.

In this video, we analyze the resignation process from start to finish, providing key tips at each stage. You’ll learn strategies for providing verbal notice to your employer, composing a resignation letter and preparing your coworkers for your departure. Remember that expressing gratitude for your past experience can help you begin your next step on a positive note!

Here are some basic tips to get you started:

1. Be honest with yourself about why you are leaving your current job. Make a list of reasons and decide which ones you want to share with your current employer.
2. It’s best to have your next job lined up before you give your notice. Check out these tips on how to search for a job while employed: https://go.indeed.com/finding-a-job-while-employed
2. Give as much notice as possible, and never less than 2 weeks. Find out more about giving 2 weeks notice: https://go.indeed.com/two-weeks-notice
3. If at all possible, give your notice in person. Remember to show gratitude and keep feedback positive and productive.
4. Make sure you submit a formal letter of resignation after you give your notice. It should include these key elements: time and date, address, statement of resignation, last day of work, statement of gratitude, next steps or important information and your signature. You can only leave on good terms if you and the employer are on good terms.

    I’m not.

Most UK companies now have 3 month notice periods if at a reasonably high level. Seems to be not so common in the US.

  3. Mikkel Mane on April 24, 2022 at 7:02 pm

In the UK some firms hold you to a week for every year you have been there – potentially 10 to 12 weeks .
    2 Weeks would be a dream !

  4. Bean Taco on April 24, 2022 at 7:05 pm

2 weeks notice? Hah, they’d be lucky if I give 2 days notice.

  5. Cheyenne Biederman on April 24, 2022 at 7:06 pm

I absolutely hate my job. Management is horrible. The boss is the worst. And they never schedule me for my proper schedule. I wish I didn’t have to give two weeks notice because I’ll be treated very rudely for those two weeks

  6. Sreypor Chan on April 24, 2022 at 7:06 pm

I’ve never been so happy resigning a job, I feel free.

  10. Heather Whitlock on April 24, 2022 at 7:09 pm

I quit the same day I started my new job. My manager was awful and I didn’t do any of this

  11. Frissdas1207 on April 24, 2022 at 7:10 pm

This is shit advice. The company doesn’t give you a 2 week notice when they fire you. Get a new job offer and dip. You don’t owe anyone anything, especially an employer.

  12. John O'Connor on April 24, 2022 at 7:13 pm

What if I’m offered a position while I haven’t put “two weeks in” just in case I wouldn’t get an offer.

It’s The Great Resignation, lots of people will be following the steps in this video

Always act respectfully , after all your former boss is going to be a reference for you. Life is short, your working to live not living to work, get out of your comfort zone and grow, leave the comfort/familiarity of the nest behind, spread your wings and find that prize. Be humble yet optimistic and stay positive . I hope everyone lands their dream job.

  15. Nyume on April 24, 2022 at 7:13 pm

  24. Priscilla Ruiz on April 24, 2022 at 7:29 pm

I’m wondering if you really need to write a letter of resignation if it’s entry level job? I’m leaving a job at a grocery store but i was just going to have a meeting with the manager and tell them

  25. Jen on April 24, 2022 at 7:29 pm

i’m about to quit cus the management is horrible and talk about you behind your back at a DAYCARE like wow

  26. Teragram on April 24, 2022 at 7:30 pm

After reading a bunch of comments I’m just throw this out there but the 2 week rule is if you DON’T want to burn bridges and screw over your coworkers.
If it’s a terrible work environment with awful people then feel free to walk away as you see fit. Hand in 2 weeks If you potentially want references, or to refer a friend for a position, or possibly a backup job in case the new place doesn’t work out and you know the old place will welcome you back with open arms.

  27. TotalDiesel on April 24, 2022 at 7:32 pm

I quit today with an email on the spot after 3 years. They were pissed. Good riddance. Id rather starve than have their agenda on my mind 24/7

  28. Nelson Alvarez on April 24, 2022 at 7:32 pm

This scenario is rarely how it goes when leaving. If you’re a valuable employee they are going to guilt trip you HARD. Be prepared to get some shade and take it with class. It’s actually incredible how everyone’s perception of you will change immediately, even if you are a valued employee.

  29. UCantSeeHunter on April 24, 2022 at 7:33 pm

If they can fire you without notice, you can leave without notice. These companies don’t own you.

  30. Wisty Rivendell on April 24, 2022 at 7:34 pm

Indeed are simply the best job search site out there…absolutely brilliant fro start to finish.

I just walked out of my job and gave them my military base ID and quite my job and I have been doing this crapy job for 1 year and it’s not worth doing it anymore and now I work in the meat department in Food lion going to start next week so excited and a better pay .

  32. The Silent Hero on April 24, 2022 at 7:35 pm

I’m getting ready to do this. I like where I work, my boss does care about his employees, and feel like I’ll be letting everyone down. And we’re short staffed right now. Still I feel this new opportunity is much better for my career so I just have to get it over with

  33. Phantom Detectives LLC on April 24, 2022 at 7:36 pm

My position is as an at will employee I don’t owe my company anything if I’m resigning and they don’t owe me anything if they let me go. I’ve seen people fired for giving two weeks. Sometimes it happens often.

  34. Natalie Tichawana on April 24, 2022 at 7:37 pm

Okay so im scared to do this im an awkward person help and im way to nice and english isnt my first language lmaoooo i freeze up and i hate jugment wish me luck.

The small 20-employee company I worked for was recently acquired by a giant corporation. They were dumbfounded when all 20 of us quit on the same day. Haha. No hard feelings.

  42. Heather Whitlock on April 24, 2022 at 7:47 pm

Either way he comes to were I work and he doesn’t look me in the eyes, because he knows he’s not doing the right thing for anyone there

  43. usxr on April 24, 2022 at 7:48 pm

I’m 14 i work in a grocery store and I want to quit. Not because it’s hard or anything but because my co-works are so annoying and the managers are rude to everyone and, the store is disgusting. On top of that they never buy new stuff so we have to use all the old broken carts for stuff.

  44. Matthew Johnson on April 24, 2022 at 7:48 pm

Really glad I watched this, was about to give notice by email and my email was definitely not positive enough. I think in person, simple and positive is so much better. Thanks

  45. John Mellencamp on April 24, 2022 at 7:51 pm
