Miracles (Can a Miracle happen?)

Miracles (Can a Miracle happen?)

Join George and John as they discuss and debate different Philosophical ideas. Today they will be looking at Miracles. We understand Miracles to be a violation of a law of nature, but the question is, can a miracle happen? Most religions claim Miracles happen, so do we have a basis to believe in Miracles.

The two will be discussing this idea as well as looking at David Hume’s criticisms of the idea of Miracles. This debate will take a for and against look at the ideas of Miracles and if it is right to believe in them.

Looks like you are still in 1st std of philosophy. You have to read a lot many philosopers to understand miracles; especially Theistic philosopers.

The issue is, "how do you believe." The problem of miracles is that they do not include the criteria for which reasonable belief may be given. The outlandish need not be a miracle, it can simply be the unreasonable. If you over eat for two weeks you would not believe you should lose weight, and if you do lose weight it is not a miracle.

6:20 an insertion of a completely bs review of quantum physics. The laws of QFT are MORE consistent than the generally inaccurate laws of Newton that we take for granted as strict.

Life in itself is a miracle- my heart pump hundreds of litres of blood a day, my brain can store trillions of GB of data, I can discern between sounds and process them separately, my DNA is so compact it can be lengthened to the moon and back. To me that’s all is a miracle

People use word "miracle" in many different senses. For instance, creationists argue that universe couldnt came from nothing. They find it absurd, unbelievable, something against nature, and the way i see it, it could be labeled "miracle" as well.

well presented ………… simple to understand

And also people who think they seen a miracle could be as a result of neurological dysfunction e.g. hearing and seeing voices that only exists in their own mind. And also actively believing in something e.g. ghosts, can wire your brain into seeing ghosts during your lifetime. So anything that goes against the laws of nature is experiences only occurred in the mind, but doesn’t exist in the external world.

Sounds like Hume was metaphysically stupid. Say, if i can make rules, i can also break or cancel suspend violate….them whenever i feel like it, why then did Hume think that the almighty God cannot break or suspend….His own laws of nature or physics????
Too much philo makes people stupid, i guess.
Just know that abstract reason, the analytical or denuded perceptual one, the one that underlies philo, science………… *is the most inferior*
*form of human reason, not to*
*mention the fact that it is also faillible, culture-bound….*

    1:28 – 500 people Saw Jesus. 1 Corinthians 15:3-9.

2:45 Well none of them have proof for ‘their miracles’ Like how christianity does.
We dont have one miracle from a other religion that has reliable scources also.
We have to ask The religions first, "What do you mean by that? " "What evidence is there for that being divine?" and "How did you come to that conclusion?"

4:01 Just seems like your’e saying If there is a God He isnt all powerful

6:16 what you have just done is made an analogy and then assumed it was true straight away "it might just be rare" "so do you accept that its rare and not a miracle"

also i might be wrong but the analogy is false because that event of floating does break the law of gravity its the same reason you float in space because you appear and become weightless and gravity is supposed to pull you to the ground not let go of you, i dont know how thats a rare occurance. And you contradicted yourself by saying God cant break a natural law because it would break everything else, but the analogy shows that a law of gravity can be broken (I might be wrong on this one).

7:05 Its not that he needs to its that he can and he will, and doesnt need questioning. He "breaks the natural laws" simply to show something that is so shocking and amazing to our mind. if he wanted to he could do other things that arent as shocking yet are still miracles like make a bunch of rice grains Form the word "Jesus" the reason this may be less shocking because You are allowed to doubt if a human did it.
To add on to my point, all powerful doesnt make you limited to not being allowed to send signs to your creations.

    7:14 Circulatory Argument/Circular Reasoning Fallacy.
He engeneered life properly, Lets look at fine tuning and also Chemistry, its not a need for him its a need for us. your’e only arguing "if there is a God why is the earth so precisely made?"
and youre assuming he Needs to do this, he only does it because we need him to do it, though he doesnt have to take our commands, us needing something and him supplying it is simply not a command its a beg for help and a sign of his existence.

7:30 This one is just an appeal to emotion fallacy, Youre just arguing that if miracles were real how comes only some experience it, show me how that resembles favourtism.

7:50 You’re statement is presupposing that its morally bad yet you have no morality to stand on. Yes people die everyday thats just how life goes but its only death to humans, For God is the God of the living not the dead, Thus simply meaning no one dies they just relocate.

8:07 wars are humans fault not his. We have free will, thats litteraly what the story of adam and eve shows. How can one be Good if theres no opposition to Good. the law of polarity states that there are two poles to things.

    8:18 Appeal to Ignorance Fallacy

God bless you, May Jesus Reveal himself to you.

I actually think the point of miracles existing across religions deserves more credence. The response to that in this video was that various religious groups could all witness the same true miracle and then report it differently. That’s absolutely a possibility, but from my limited historical knowledge there are a number of different, esoteric miracles individually claimed by religions. Mohammed claims revelation from the Angel Gabriel. The New Testament prophets claim revelation from Jesus. Joseph Smith claims revelation from God. These are all separate instances and mutually incompatible. The only way they wouldn’t be is if the same God is revealing himself in all these occasions. However, we must surely dispose of this theory on the assumption that God (if he exists) is not a malevolent deceiver. So, we are left with the fact that either one of these miracles is true or none. And the fact that there are so many other instances of individual revelation that I have not listed, and all or all but one have to be false, definitely discredits the reliability of miracles. P.S. Thanks for the videos you guys make. I’ve been doing a self study of philosophy the last few months and frequently refer to your channel for additional insights.
