Matthew 25 | Parables of Jesus: The Parable of the Talents | The Bible

Matthew 25 | Parables of Jesus: The Parable of the Talents | The Bible

Jesus gives the parables of the talents.

Matthew 25:14–30

14 For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods.
15 And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey.
16 Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents.
17 And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two.
18 But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord’s money.
19 After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them.
20 And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more.
21 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
22 He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them.
23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
24 Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed:
25 And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine.
26 His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed:
27 Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury.
28 Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents.
29 For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.
30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

عیسی مسیح فرزند خدای زنده تنها راه نجات و تنها راه بسوی آرامش هست، توبه کنید و عیسی مسیح را بعنوان تنها نجات دهنده خود بپذیرید و زندگی جاوید پیدا کنید.

"…and cast the unprofitable servant into utter darkness" — it doesn’t leave much room for human error, growth, forgiveness or evolution!

It is all about using your talents to increase, not hide it. To increase for the Lord.

Verily i say unto you if every man was to witness what they should bring unto the father after death were to save it from earth it would be good unto him after he pull his stinking legs out of the nasty smelling coffin i do believe jophiel (angel)named has blessed mankind even the ladies and i do believe all the angels helped accordingly to jesus but when are they going to come back to God have they been vanquished in sin and forget that i am a forgiver from i was given unto them

So this means ‘if you don’t use it you loose it’ (natural skills) and if you do use it you will benefit and gain more skills which you must also use

The servant who had more , has wasted his talents

  20. @docian on July 10, 2025 at 11:53 pm

I think Jesus is talking about the sin of sloth and lack of effort. We must continuously apply ourselves assiduously in life and grow spiritually. The person who does not work to better him or herself and who does not use the natural gifts God gave the person, not only for his own advancement but for the benefit of society, is the one who is the faithless servant and Jesus will require an explanation of why he did not develop the gift Jesus gave the person but just drifted through life aimlessly. Also with regard to prayer life. If we say one prayer a day we should be increasing this to two prayers and then three etc and not just think it is enough to carry on with the one prayer alone and do the bare minimum. In other words Christianity is a dynamic religion and we must be looking to progress all the time and this takes effort. If we are static then we fall back. This is how I see this parable.

How do you think this story would have gone, had the third servant tried to trade with his one talent as the others had, but due to having the worst ability (as judged by his lord) he had instead returned with even less than what he had been given?

  25. @hoffenwurdig1356 on July 10, 2025 at 11:59 pm

Based on the Christian writings of an expert in ancient languages, my mother taught me that the phrase “there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth” carries a hidden meaning. Jesus is actually using the metaphor that for the person’s wrongdoing, they will be banished to a place outside of a city’s walls, where they will be vulnerable — especially after night falls. Consequently, the sinner will be attacked by lions and killed.

what I dont get regarding this story is the reward for doing good appears to be "much responsibility". I dont know about any of you here….but when I think of heaven I dont think of "much responsibility"….which kind of goes back to that other verse Luke 19:17 that kind of speaks of we will be put in charge of cities…which begs the question…it seems to imply the people in the cities arent christians….since if it appears standard that christians are ruling over the cities as a reward, just then, who populates these cities? is it just christians who sort of just slid in under the wire? remember not everyone is a Billy Graham, also scripture also talks kindly on those who "worketh not"

If it doesn’t compliment the character of our Father, this parable isn’t properly understood.

I understand that the guy who received one talent received it based on his limited ability compared to the other two. so why is it so surprising? at least he didn’t spend or waste it.. it is entirely possible he could’ve accidentally wasted it due to his limited ability thus why he was fearful and protected the money.

Still I understand the underlying theme, shouldn’t waste God given talents
